"Service Pack did not install. Reverting Changes" Windows Vista Service Pack 1

I've tried installing it from Windows Update and also from the stand alone installer which is quite a hefty download. I've tried closing all non-essential processes before installing as well as following the troubleshooting guide at: http://support.microsoft.com/Kb/947366

No matter which update method I use I get this error, "Service Pack did not install, Reverting changes." - I wonder why Microsoft wouldn't program their OS to tell us WHY it did not install ?

At least when I use the stand alone installer I get an error code 0x80004005 ( why not for Windows Update version though ? ) and a link to that web page ^ above. I've tried all the methods and used System Mechanic 7 to look for problems. No joy.

So far it looks as if I might have to do a clean install of Vista before adding Service Pack 1 but I'd rather avoid that since I've just nicely got my system set up the way I like it. Even if I do a clean install, its not forced to make the Service Pack complete it's installation. Although I've created a Hard disk image with Acronis True Image Home 11 on my external drive I can always recover my current set-up if the clean install doesn't work. But it's going to take a lot of time and I've just spent many hours with it already.

All of the drivers are up to date.

I know I might have to wait for a "Tool" to show up on Windows Update that might fix the problem but after checking that for the past couple of days no such tool has shown up yet.

I might have to wait for new drivers to be written but surely these would've been developed during the release candidates of SP1 ?

Bullguard Internet Security 8.0 has been disabled from starting with Windows.

After some hours of trying to solve this problem myself, I can't seem to find a solution.

I would appreciate any help anyone can offer !

Basically the same thing happened to me.  I managed to get an updated audio driver installed, after that SP1 showed up as avaliable via windows update.  I downloaded the update and started the installation process.  When the install got to 98% of stage 1, it said "service pack did not install, reverting changes"  About an hour and a half later, the laptop booted up normally with no error messages.  I have no idea what happened since no error was generated.  I did not disable antivirus or antispyware or wireless connection during this first attempt.  I will try again tomorrow and disable these items before I proceed with the install.  All I know is, Vista is becoming very tiresome.  I find myself spending more time troubleshooting problems than being productive using the computer.

Same here!

I tried to install Service Pack 1 by Windows Update and by standalone but it didn't work neither. I also receive the message "Service Pack did not install, Reverting changes." but here's a new problem:

After this message I just restarted my computer and Windows now tells me my product-key would be invalid. I bought Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit with my Dimension 9200 from Dell. Could it be, that Windows perceives my "Dell-version" of Vista as a cracked one? It's really annoying, i tried it twice and i always end up in a white screen with the 3 options of buying a original key, entering another key or search for help on the internet. I can't use Vista after failing to install Service Pack 1 anymore.

My only chance is going back to a Restorepoin, so at the moment i have to renounce Service Pack 1.

Looking forward to hearing from you! Maybe there's a solution? ;)

Hello try this solution wich was ok for me

copy this lines in a file name "register.bat" for example

net stop wuauserv
net stop Cryptsvc
ren %windir%\SoftwareDistribution SD.old
ren %windir%\system32\catroot2 catroot2.old
net start wuauserv
net start Cryptsvc

sfc /scannow

execute this file in administrator mode

restart your computer and execute the standalone SP1

I can't really understand why Vista would ask you for a new key since you must've already registered and activated it the first time you used it. If I have to do a clean install, at the moment it looks like I may, I hope I don't get the same problem. Have you tried a clean install ?

The main thing is that we have a common problem and the more people who mention it, the better chance we have of finding a solution.

It just irritates me that everytime I get Windows set-up just right that something eventually comes along and ruins the installation so I have to start clean. When I corrected the system files by reparing them using the installation DVD it wiped all my documents even though the option I checked stated that I'd be keeping my settings and user files - good job I backed them up on to an external drive otherwise I'd be making a complaint to Microsoft about it right now.

I'll do that. I'm just in the middle of backing up my user files at the moment, I was going to try a clean install just to get it over with but I'll delay doing do now.

I'll come back and let you know how it goes, thanks for the suggestion :smileyhappy:!

I managed to get a sucessful install this morning.  I disabled my security suite.  I think it may have had some files locked on the first failed attempt.  The install was rather lengthy, almost 2 hours in stage 3.  So far, everything appears to be working ok.

Ok, found the fault:

The Windows Vista Update 938371 isn't installed.

So, i downloaded it from the microsoft homepage and tried to install it, but the installation told me it wouldn't be a update for my system.

Huh?

Help me! :(

Edit:

Ok, reinstalled Vista with the current updates and installed Service Pack 1 without any fault! :D

Yay, works great!

Break out the beer !

Well I don't have any shampaign :smileysad: . . .

Anyway, a clean install of Vista without installing any drivers has done the job - I now have Service Pack 1 installed. I used the stand alone installer for this.

I highly recommend that if you are having problems with installing SP1, back up all your user files and peform a clean install - install your sevice pack straight afterwards. I was advised to do this with XP Service Pack 2 when that came out but figured that SP1 for Vista might not require such drastic measures. I now have to install all my apps and games again but I'm just happy I got SP1 to install.

In my case, I think some installed applications and drivers were the cause of my troubles.
