"ntldr is compressed" error message

I started with the "ntldr is missing" message.  I followed the instructions from the past post listed below.  It seemed like it worked.  When I restarted I get a new message "ntldr is compressed"

Here's the solution to your problem:

Windows XP users

  1. Insert the Windows XP bootable CD into the computer.
  2. Restart computer.  Press F12 at Dell Logo.  Select CD ROM.  Press Enter
  3. When prompted to press any key to boot from the CD, press any key.
  4. Once in the Windows XP setup menu press the "R" key to repair Windows.
  5. Log into your Windows installation by pressing the "1" key and pressing enter.
  6. You will be prompted for the administrator password, enter that password. Normally its blank.
  7. Copy the below two files to the root directory of the primary hard disk. In the below example we are copying these files from the CD-ROM drive letter "E". This letter may be different on your computer.

    copy e:\i386\ntldr c:\
    copy e:\i386\ntdetect.com c:\

  8. Once both of these files have been successfully copied, remove the CD from the computer and reboot.

Do the steps 1 to 6

type this in command prompt:

    attrib -c c:\ntldr

if it doesn't work, try this:

    compact /u /a c:\ntldr

then do the step 8

Try to copy the ntldr from another machine into a floppy disk, and copy it to your computer.

Or try to do this:     expand e:\i386\ntldr._ c:\ntldr

If you can't replace the file c:\ntldr, do this before:    attrib -r -h -s c:\ntldr

I tried this and nothing has changed.

Any more ideas?

compact does not seem to be  a good command- it is not listed on the help list.

EMT64,

Your recommendation to use the expand command should work if Lorie is receiving the "ntldr is compressed" message.  Ran into a similar problem last Friday on a Dell 8300 with XP Pro SP1a.  My prior post (as you can probably tell) was straight from the horse's mouth so to speak.  Apparently, all of the system files in the i386 directory on Lorie's CD are compressed.

Lorie, sorry about the delay responding.  Took my granddaughter to Disney World last week.

This first command, in conjunction with the previous post, steps 1-7, did it for me. Thanks!  As another post mentions, compact command was not present on XP. http://annoyances-resolved.blogspot.com
