kilamobilia,

Formatting is a part of installing Windows XP. Follow the procedures here and in the included links.

i'm still having problems.  i followed the directions for the ctrl & f11 problems because mine didn't work.  when i set it up so that it would boot from disk, it didn't work on the one cd drive.  so i was going to try the other drive.  now i can't get the f2 to work so i can switch my drives.  now what?

Are you using your original XP Disc?  Are the Optical Drives configured to be the first boot device?

kilamobilia,

In my original answer to your question I provided a link to reinstallation procedures. One critical item in those procedures (which you have not followed or you would not receive the version error message) is that you must boot from the Windows XP CD, not let it autostart from within Windows.

ok this is what i get when i run my windows xp cd that came with the computer:

setup can not contuine because the version on your computer is newer then the version on the cd.

warning: if you decide to delete the newer version of windows that is currently installed on your computer, the files and settings can not be recovered.

then the only options i have are cancel or details.  it won't let me continue.

so now not only does the crtl F11 not work, but the F2 won't work anymore either.  i just want my computer back to the way it was when i took it out of the box.

other problems that i have is the printer won't work, i've unstalled and reinstalled it.  i have norton problems to the point that i can't uninstall it because it's not in the add/remove programs or on the start menu, but it keeps popping up when i start my computer saying it needs fixed.  i've tried reinstalling it but it says that i can't because it's already running.  all my problems started when my wireless internet provider went down and they had come and reset my box so i could get back on the internet.  once they fixed that my e-mail stopped working i kept getting timed out.  the internet provider suggested i have my computer cleaned.  paid $50 for that still had e-mail problems and still have e-mail problems, plus the problems i've mentioned above.  i just want it fixed.

any other suggestions?  what about switching to an external hard drive will that fix my problems? and if so what kind should i get?
