chiarot,

Go to Start|Run, type sfc and click OK. Tell System File Checker to extract one file (setupx.dll) from the installation CD and install it in C:\Windows\System. When the extraction dialog opens aim the extraction at the Win98 folder on the Windows Recovery CD. The file should be extracted without a problem.

Hi Denny,

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately, it didn't work. Here's what I did. Opened sfc. Chose extract one file (setupx.dll). Then I chose RESTORE FROM: E:\WIN98       and I told it to SAVE FILE IN: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM. I used the recovery CD that came with DELL computer.    I then got a message saying, "The file was not found. Verify that you have selected the correct "Restore From" location and try again."

I really have no idea what this file is for. I just formatted hard drive and then reintalled windows98 without adding any other programs onto computer. One of the first things I did was run sfc, and guess what? that file was still missing.

Any other ideas? Thanks.

chiarot,

That file should be in the Precopy2.cab file. (I assume that your CD-ROM drive uses E:\ as its drive letter.) If you have WinZip on your system you can expand setupx.dll from that file using WinZip and install it in C:\Windows\System.
