spoolsv.exe possible problem

Dimension 8400, 3.2 ghz, Win XP Pro, 1gig RAM,

Yesterday, tried to cancel a print job which seemed to hang.  Tried to restart but everything become sooo slow on startup even from the Windows startup screen.  The job was still hung.  Stopped/restarted Print Spooler a few times to try and get some normalcy back.  Every time I start up now, everything is extremely slow until I can finally stop the Print Spooler service.  Is there a way to reinstall that service or spoolsv.exe?  Other things like MSN Messenger now seem to hang on shut down after all this started.  Any suggestions??  I've tried Safe Mode, System Restore, uninstall/reinstall of printer, stop-restart of spoolsv.exe service, stop-restart of spoolsv.exe service at command prompt.

Thxs.

If that print job is still listed in queue, you have to purge the job or document from the printer queue. Also the file attempting to run in that queue could be corrupted.

No, I don't have SpyScan.

I think the job is purged by now.  I had HP online support help with that.  Am I going to have to reinstall Windows XP because of this hung job created havoc all over the OS??

Thanks again.

If the error is in the spool services, I would uninstall, then reinstall the printer driver, to purge out all old items in that file. As the spooler file seems to be the only issue listed in your message. The only thing I know of that causes problems of that type are corrupted files sent to the printer (cached into the spooler memory), if the printer can not read a corrupted file it will hang for long periods of time and print nothing or print out a bunch of unreadable print (usually the sign of a corrupted file or printer driver).
If the file is corrupted, delete it and create a new one, if it is the printer driver, uninstall, then reboot the system and reinstall it. The simple test for the printer driver, go into your printer settings in the control panel, and open properties for your printer and run a test page. If it prints out the test page fine, then that leaves a corrupted file.

You should be able to purge the file from the printer queue without uninstalling the printer, which could just lead to new problems.

If purging the printer queue doesn't help (or it's already empty), run a system file check to make sure the print spooler hasn't been corrupted.

click start>run
type in: sfc /scannow
(space between sfc and /)
click ok

sfc will replace any damaged/missing XP files. It may ask for you XP CD. Reboot and see if the problem is fixed.

First, thanks everyone who's provided suggestions.

My problems are still persisting. I've completely uninstalled/reinstalled print drivers and HP software. I've run the OS scan as suggested and that found no problems. Still, no relief from the sluggish reponse of the OS. It used to take about 4 seconds on the Windows XP splash screen and then quickly loads up the profiles. Now, it takes about a min or two to get through the splash screen. About 10 minutes after logging in before a profile is usable. I can't bring up Task Manager in time to see what happening in those 10 minutes. Then, IE is unresponsive and the start menu is sluggish. Oddly, printing works very well now. On shutdown, MSN Messenger gives the message about not responding to shutdown request. Should I repost my problem with a different subject heading now since it doesn't seem like the print queue is the problem?

Who knew that restarting with a hung print job would cause SO much trouble?! Any more suggestions?

Thxs.

Do a System Restore to a date before you had the printer/restart problem.
click start>help&support
click on "undo changes..."
follow the prompts and select a date prior to the problems.

If that doesn't fix it, reboot and press F8 before XP loads.
Select "last known good"

You may have to do a Repair/Reinstall of XP. This isn't a Reformat/Reinstall so your personal files and setting shouldn't be lost, but always a good idea to back them up first. You will have to reinstall all the XP hotfixes and updates, but that's better than reformatting and starting over from scratch.

Another alternative is to use the Dell/Symantec PC Restore, assuming your system was shipped after July 15, 2004, which will reset the system to the way Dell shipped it. In this case you definitely need to back up your personal files, and you'll have to reinstall all Microsoft (XP, Office, etc) updates and any software you added to the system.

I've already done a System Restore & a Last Known Good Configuration.

Anything else?
