start button task bar hour glass

I have Dell PC with Windows XP Home Edition.

When start up the task bar and start button cannot be accessed for a few minutes and the hour glass is shown. Other icons are aceessible. I have SP1 installed just last week, but this problem existed before SP1 was installed.

Any suggestions would be appreciated to fix this problem

Thanks

You should try cleaning out your Temp Folder. Go to RUN and type in %TEMP% and click OK. Click on Edit in the TEMP Folder window and choose Select All and hit your Delete key. Shut the Temp Folder Window. .Now go to Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools and run Disk Cleanup. Now go to RUN and type in SFC /SCANNOW ( There is a space between SFC and / ) and click on OK to run System File Checker. Now Right click on MY Computer and choose Open. Right click on Local disk ( C: ) and choose Properties/Tools. Run Error-Checking and Defragmentation.

Liche, I am sorry for jumping in this topic with another question, but when you delete the %temp% should you include hidden items as well. I did exactly like you said, and it came that this folder has 3 hidden files. To include them I have to tell it to show all files under folder options.

Does deleteing temp folder do any harm to your system?

After booting Windows, the entrire contents of the TEMP folder are fair game for removal. Anything "in use" won't get deleted, but the rest will.
