temporary internet files changed location?

I have XP.  Went to empty my temp files and the current location label looked funny.  Didn't remember it looking that way.  Came here and found a post where it was explained how it should look.  Mine didn't.  Then I noticed that when going into settings to clear there was nothing there!  That didn't make sense.  There is always something in there.

The current location looked like this: C:\DOCUM~1\Diane\Locals~1\TempInternetFiles\

Instead of: C:\DocumentsandSettings\Diane\LocalSettings\TemporaryInternetFiles\

Did a system restore and it is back to saying what it should.

My question is .. how did this happen?  Did something highjack me? Where were the files going that it was empty?

And most importantly, do you think I corrected the problem?

Thank you in advance to whoever answers me!!

LuvmiScoti,

For some reason, Windows changed a part of the path to your TIF to conform to the DOS 8.3 naming convention. Under that convention, any location longer than eight characters is truncated to six characters with a tilde abd a number. So Documents and Settings becomes DOCUME~1 and Local settings becomes Locals~1. It is odd, however, that Temporary Internet Files was not altered to Tempor~1.

It is unlikely that you were hacked, it was probably simply a Windows hiccup which you corrected. Just for general principles, however, if you don't routinely scan for spyware it would be advisable.

Download Ad-aware from here, Spybot from here and Microsoft AntiSpyware from here. Check online for updates to their databases then run them and delete all the spyware they identify.

Thank you so much Denny for replying.  I was wondering if you would!  It was one of your responses that verified what the current location was supposed to say before I wrote about my problem :)  I know have some of your things in my favorites!

I did run Adaware .. should have put that in my last log ... and do that regularly.  Thank you for the other links!  I will do them.

By the way, I have no idea what the heck you were talking about with the DOS  and longer than eight characters etc... lol  That's all greek to me!  As long as you feel the problem is solved .. I am happy!

Thanx again! Cute pup!

An easy way to open your temp files is go to Start > Run and in the box type in %temp% and OK.
