update.exe using alot of cpu usage and not acctually updating please help!!

when i turn windows automatic updates on it starts the updater except it doesnt acctually update. instead update.exe flys in and out of the task manager and uses up a heap of cpu usage which it never used to do before.

i have tired absolutly everything i can possibly think of. i have used ad-aware and programs like that, i have used registry cleaners, ive done thousands of virus and malware scans, i have tried reinstalling the updater from the windows download page and i have also tried hijack this and still i have this problem.

the only option i have left is to reformat and reinstall a fresh copy of windows. i would much prefer not to have to do that so i was hoping that someone could help me here because untill i can fix it i ghave to have my automatic updates turned off. this i absolutly hate!!

i have a DELL Inspiron 9300 running windows xp sp2 with 2gb ram.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HELP!!!

plastic_prohpet, You could reset your auto update to the other option (check for updates and notify me) and download updates this way. It might help stop the updater from running all the time. Also you might want to try this.Control panel>admin tools>
disable the Automatic Updates service in services.msc, and restart. Then go back in and restart it,that may fix the issue.(should be set to automatic)

well as i said before, if the automatic updates are turned on update.exe flys all over the task manager and uses up alot of cpu usage without acctually downloading anything. this means that if i turn it on no matter what it is set to (as they were the first things i tried) it uses too much cpu and does not download. that automatic update service does not work properly

Not all that calls itself update.exe is friendly. Maybe you should ask the experts in the HijackThis forum if they could help? This might be a virus?

Edit: Oh, I see now that you have already done so.

On my machine the windows updating process is wuauclt.exe. See this site that explains a few things that update.exe is associated with.Do you have any of these programs installed. http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/update/

aaahhhh ok? im not sure weather that was meant to help me or just waste my time. either way it did not help in any way, infact all it did was make me download another poor scan that does nothing untill you pay for it. nice try if you were trying to get me to buy somthing, however i do not intend to spend money on those sorts of thing.

does anyone acctually have any idea on how i could fix this??

I don't really understand what Microsoft is writing here. Is this relevant?

Link to Microsoft about failing updates. Some hotfixes available also....

March 27th, 2008 04:00

no this is not relevant.

i do not mean to be rude in any way but is there accutally anyone here who acctually knows what theyre talking about?? because it seems as though no one really has a clue and is just taking random guesses without accutally even reading what my symptoms are or what i have already done to try and fix this.

no offence but, if you dont know what your talking about or have no real background in windows xp troubleshooting please dont bother taking random guesses and sending me to read links that just waste my time. Thank you.

And you have of cause cleaned Window Update Temporary folder before you
reinstalled the latest version of Windows Update?

March 27th, 2008 06:00

well if you read my very first post about the problem you will see that i have cleaned all temporary and registry files and one of the last things i did was a reinstall. so yes, yes i have.

PLEASE READ ORIGINAL POST BEFORE SUGGESTING SOLUTIONS

well you see thats the thing, i have already gone through the hijack this log thouroughly with a professional. we went through everything and he had nothing more to offer me.

however i will go back and try it again. as for sardonic comments, i guess you wouldnt understand how frustrating it is when people ask you questions over and over again that you have already answered before they asked. it annoys me when people dont pay attention to the post.

aside from that i thank you very much for your help.

cheers,
