Hi:

The latest version is JRE 6 Update 1, and you should upgrade. You are best to download it from the website here:
http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Before installing it, you should remove any and all previous Java versions via Control Panel/ Add or Remove Programs.

You could also run the MSJVM Removal Tool 1.0a
in case you have it on your system.

Then install the latest Sun Java mentioned above as the last step.

Thank you joe53 and ALBrando for your help.  I updated to the latest version and removed the old version per your advice.

I have another question.  I looked into the misconfig box and noticed that the java installation added "jusched" into startup and the box is checked.  Is this necessary?  If this is not necessary, what's the best way to uncheck it - through msconfig or the java icon in the control panel.

Thank you from a java illiterate.

"jusched" means java update schedule, it checks for updates periodically as set by the user.

If you are a person who always checks for updates manually, like me, you don't need it, and the way to disable it is from the Java icon in the control panel. That's what I do. If for some reason it does not remove the startup registry entry you can remove it using any program that has this feature, like CCleaner

I would not rely on the Java Update mechanism, cause in many instances in the past I found updates manually, where as the Java Update mechanism did not.

ALBrando, thank you again.  I turned off the auto update from the java icon and the start up registry was deleted also.
