What I would do is swap the drives and make the 80 gig your primary drive (slave the old one to the new one), partition the ne drive with a 25 gig partition for the OS and programs and the rest for data.

Ok let me get it.

Right now my primary is the 80 gig , i guess because it is my C drive.???

Can i find this out from the setup program without having to open PC.

Also can i just copy files and folders from C to D drive.

WHat about email and outlook express, how can i save this to my 13 gig d drive??

Thanks very much

You can use the XP Files and Settings Transfer (FAST) wizard to create an image of them and save to your 13 Gig drive, then import back once you have XP installed.  This is a good guide to using the FAST wizard. Just be sure you have an up-to-date antivirus before you re-instate them!

Okay, I see what you're trying to do. You could go either way but you can not copy the program like that, only data.  I would still use the newer higher speed drive for XP, partition it into two logical drives, one for the OS and one for data.  Make the new C drive about 20 gigs and the rest for data.

I would then use the old 13 gig drive for backups and slave it ot the new drive.  Leave the old drive intact and import your data to the new D Drive (the second partition on the new drive) and once you happy you have it all, format the old drive and configure your backups to it.

Just my opinion, but I think it makes sense.

I think you need to decide if you want to end up with both Windows 98 and XP dual-bootable on the same PC.  I'm guessing that you don't want that (and I can't think why you would want that unless you're a software developer/tester).

Then it's a case of:
a) do I upgrade Windows 98 in place, or
b) do I install Windows XP on the new drive and then migrate my Windows 98 applications/data to it?

There are tools available to migrate applications/data from one drive/OS to another but I personally prefer to simply re-install the original software on the new OS and then migrate the data across.  In your situation, I might even swap the hard drives so that the new, larger drive is my primary and contains XP.

I suspect that you might have problems upgrading your old Windows 98 disk as it's quite small and is probably quite full.  So you might want to consider installing XP on the new drive anyway.

As always with things like this, caveat emptor -- if you can backup your current system before upgrading, then I would do so.

I have a disk from a freind that is asking me to upgrade or clean install. I know its better to clean install but I have 2 hard drives one 880 gig and 0ne original 13 g.

can i keep 98se on 13 gig and xp on the 80 so I dont have to remove 98 and all files

I would like to back up all files to the 13 gig drive soi i will have easy access.

Will this work

Before you go to far, "disk from a friend"?  Someone gave you an used retail copy of XP?  Or, someone is loaning you their copy of XP?  Second option will not work.

Insert the XP cd into the cd while windows is running and you will have a chance to check for compatibility.

You can download the drivers for the network card and burn to cd in case xp does not load the drivers ( almost certainly will do )  You an download the sound card drivers once you have the new sstem up and network drivers installed.

I like to go into Device Manager and make a note of the Video Card ( Display Adaptor ) . . the Sound Card . . and Network Card for reference after the new installation if I have to download drivers.

You can hover over Product Support at the top of this page, select downloads and navigate to your model to download drivers and BIOS if needed.

I would disconnect the second drive for the installation . . jsut to be sure you don't mess with it accidentally.

Have fun . . wrs

That's why I asked.  You cannot do this.  XP is licensed to one computer and one computer only.  When you try and activate it, it will fail.  In 30 days it will stop working.

What I meant with 2nd option is that if someone is loaning you their copy of XP, as it appears, that is already installed on another computer, it will not work.  It's also a violation of the license agreement and illegal.
