usb device not recognized...

I repeatedly get this message:

One of the USB device connected to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it.

Each time I do as suggested and reconnect it, it usually works until my screensaver activates and I log back on.

Is there a remedy for this?

The device is a Simpletech external usb hard drive.

It is connected to the laptop's usb ports.  No seperate monitor involved.

Do you have the device connected to your monitor? I had the same problem with a USB mouse I had connected to the monitor.

'Permanent' devices (hard drives, mouses, keyboards, etc.) I think should be connected to the PC's USB ports.

Go to Control Panel>Admin Tools>Computer Mgnt>Disk management See if the drive is showing up but just needs a drive letter assignment.
