using XP-ipconfig and ping commands not recognized

I have a dimension 2400. When I tried to enter the ipconfig from the command prompt the response is that it is an unrecognized batch command. the ping command also has the same result. I am running with service pack 2. I did try updating to IE-7 but had so many problems with it, I had to uninstall it. Dont know if this caused the problem. Any suggestions appreciated.
