Sounds like it could be a DNS problem. Have such problems with BellSouth ADSL. Their DNS servers have been flaky for about 4 months. The first click may fail to connect, the second usually connects, but there may be pictures, etc. on another page which don't load. A reload usually fills in the missing parts.
sorry I'm kind of computer illiterate, but how do you change your DNS numbers like you mentioned? if you could let me know I'd really appreciate it...and do I just put in one of those 3 #'s or what? thanks a lot

Did you try to specify DNS servers manually in your connection?
Earthlink works fine:
