Hey bobbyjak

thanks for replying to my message. The first time I called Dell and told them I needed the reinstallation cd they sent me the resource CD. Which is great because I needed it, but it only contains all the drivers for all the original software and hardware that came with my computer. It doesn't contain the original operating system. Thats a separate disk all together. There are two main disks that come with every new dell. The resource cd and the operating system reinstall cd. They are both used to restore a system incase of a crash. I still need the operating system reinstall disk, but I've been having no luck getting it from dell. Any suggestions from anyone?

Did you not receive an operating system CD with the system?  If not, and if you're within 30 days of the system being delivered, just tell them that you didn't receive an OS CD.  After 30 days though, you're on your own (they assume that you'll inspect the items and report losses prior to that), and the same holds true if you simply lost your CDs following delivery.  Your practical options under those circumstances are to either buy a retail copy of the operating system at any retail vendor, or to buy another license for a retail version of the OS that you might already have, which would have to be done through Microsoft (or a vendor who has license-only packages for sale).

Flooby,

not all DELLS are delivered with reinstall CD's. In the UK when buying 9 machines (optiplex 240's) I had to pay extra to get two set of CD's. But I agree with you thay are the options he now has.

Since you had XP PRO installed with a COA Product Key you could try borrowing a DELL reinstallation XP CD if your system crashes & won't boot.

My DELL WIN XP PRO CD will not even boot up the system in order to reinstall the OS. I got upset with DELL SUPPORT, and Bought another COPY OF XP Pro and it booted up and installed like it should. I brought the Win XP Pro from a third party vendoe. Now what's up with DELL's Reinstall XP Pro OS

Does the re-installation CD auto play & display a menu when you insert CD with computer is already started  , if not you could try "My Computer" right click the CD Drive & select Auto play or Open & Explore. ?

Yes it shows a menu indisde of WINDOWS, but when you boot the cd on startup, to reinstall WINDOWS XP Pro from the boot cd it will not do it. I had to use a boot disk in order to reinstall THE DELL XP PRO OS, that is when I bought the third party XP PRO, and it boots from the CD BOOTUP Menu and installs it through the boot up screen, but not DELL XP Pro

Mike,

I have this similar problem too, I have the retail version of XP Home and it boots into the CD on startup, however my DELL XP Pro didn't. I figured out that I had to push F12 on my system to display which device I wanted to boot into (HD, Floppy, CD, Network) and select the CD Drive (It was even set to boot into the CD first, but the CD never loaded). Then it would boot into the DELL XP Pro CD. Have you ever tried this? Or perhaps you have an older CD than I do. I am using the I-5100. DELL must have done something different to the CD than the retail version since it doesn't boot into it by itself.

Check your CD for scratches  or dirt & if OK you can see if DELL will replace CD but I think they will only replace if in Warranty or the 1st 30 days.

I have not tried to hit the F12 button , but will try it the next time. We have DELL Laptops at work, about 50 of them and 250 DELL desktops. They all do this. None will boot from the CD ar all. I work for a very large IT Company. so 300 DELL computers and none will boot from the CD from DELL XP PRO. We use GHOST ENTERPRISE at work to get around this DELL CD Problem. DELL has never gave us an answer as to why it won't boot from the CD.

Go figure

I bought an Inspiron8200 with XP Home last December.

My shipping list never mentioned anything about the XP CDs. I had assumed that there would be some other way to get the software if there is a need to reinstall.

If this turns out to be a shipping error which cannot be fixed, I would be EXTREMELY disappointed !! There's no way I'm going to buy another copy of the OS because of a shipping problem !!

Just to add -- I'm still within warranty.

Hopefully that would be work out.

You had better let them know, or else you will have to buy the OS. It was their mistake in not sending you  the OS
