windows xp startup problems
My dell dimension 4600 pc has got a problem. Whenever it starts up it comes up with a blue screen saying that there is an unmountable boot volume and therefore windows cannot be started. The computer will also not run in safe mode or on last known good.
This problem occured after the computer went into standby mode after turnin it on and coppying a word file onto a CDRW. none of which to my knowlege could have caused the removal of a system file.
Is there any way i could get my computer to work again (preffebly by monday 12:15 - it is kind of urgent)

You could have a hard drive failure, bad cable OR damaged system files. This article might help: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;297185
If you're still under warranty, call Dell for troubleshooting.

ctallchris,
Doing a Google search for "unmountable boot volume" will bring up numerous links that may help you work your way out of this.

No
No it is not a hardware problem as i went into the hardware diagnostic program and every test came out passed.
I have re installed the operating system and after a day the same problem occured. I cannot see it being a problem with any of the programs as the pc has worked fine with everything that has been installed on it so far.
The error message is as follows:
UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME
***Stop:0X000000ED (0X81F907B8,0X0000006,0X00000000,0X00000000)
I am actually quite in need of an operating computer at the moment as i am a student and have a lab report that has to be word processed done by friday.
My computer is well within its 3 years next business day on site warranty would it be possible to get perhaps a serviceman out by thursday midday at the latest? as this second failure has not only disabled my pc but has taken the file that i was working on with it thus making my deadline even more awkward.

thanks but it's not a virus as the computer has no links with the outside world not even by floppy
I'll try that
