windows xp validation tool says not valid

I got an error code (0x8007007a)and it was suggested that I go to windows update site for operating system validation and download something to fix the problem. When I got my inspiron 8600 it came with XP preinstalled with the operating system C/D key label on the bottom of the laptop. Now I went to the update site and typed the product key in 2 times and got the following message.

(The Windows Product Key you entered is not valid for your current Windows installation. Please try re-entering the Product Key. Make sure you enter it exactly as it appears on the COA or Product Key label. (1 attempt remaining))

Has anyone had this same problem with dell preinstalled operating system? and how did you resolve the error (0x8007007a).
thanks in advance, atla5

Most times this is a typo caused by mistaking a zero for the letter O or a B for an 8 etc. in the Activation Key. You should call Microsoft at the activation number or get some help from a friend.
However-- that error number refers to Task Scheduler problems. There is nothing you can download to fix activation problems that I know of. Did you run your anti spyware and anti virus?
