winmgmt in Task manager

Dimension 4100 Windows ME

When attempting to connect to find updates to AVG antivirus, I have gotten error messages about not being able to connect-make sure you are connected to internet, etc.  When checking task manager, winmgmt is running.  If that task is ended, updates can be completed immediately.  I have in the last couple weeks posted to Hijack This board and got help removing trojans.  All scans are now coming up clean so I don't think that is the problem.  Is winmgmt something that should be running?

The winmgmt.exe process is a legitimate microsoft windows file:  it's a core component of your system and should not be terminated. If you do terminate it, windows is likely to automatically restart the process.

among other things, it automatically runs from the PCHealth "scheduler" --- a part of System Restore.

the information i offered you was obtained by searching on the web.... and that's all the help i'm in a position to offer you.    you can try doing more searches yourself (Google, Yahoo!, or your favorite search engine).... or perhaps someone else can jump-in here with some more definitive information

So this is something that starts running when?  I've noticed that it seems to show up after I use I.E. and then the system resources steadily drop until we have to reboot if we want to do anything on the computer.

Thanks for the answers.

I did look at a few web sites but got conflciting info-one said it was needed but another said it was not unless you were a system administrator.  Another one said it had something to do with trojans.  I was confused by all that.  I will continue to research why the system slow down.   I posted on the forum because I have been very fortunate in getting help and answers.
