Help with cpu upgrade in XPS 8910
Hoping someone here can set me straight.
I have upgraded the cpu in my 8910 to an i7-6700K(unlocked multiplier)
My machine runs great, but the performance options are disabled and not available in the bio.
Can anyone here tell me how to get this enabled in the bios.
I do have the latest bios flash installed.
Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, and have a great day,
John

Ok, seems I should have cleared the cmos when I installed the 6700K.
Did that, and all is well.
Option enabled in bios although very limited.
I get much better results using the Intel XTU.

Did you install the Dell OEM i7-6700K 4.00GHz, 8MB, FSB 1600MHz, 95w, Skylake-S CPU? Part number K991T.

Hi Chris, thanks for the reply.
Long time no talk. You helped me many times with the XPS 700/720 issues
Yes, I did use the Dell oem i7-6700K.
When I go to performance options in bios, it is disabled and not able to change it.
I thought that would change with the addition of the "K" processor

With the i7 6700 that came in the machine, the overclocking feature was there, but [disabled] and not accessible to me.
I assumed that when I installed the 6700K processor that the I would be able to enable the OC feature, but unfortunately, that did not happen.
I wonder if I clear the cmos/nvram will make any difference?
I am stumped.
I remember back with the 720, when I installed the unlocked processor, the option became available to me.

That is odd. It cannot be a motherboard issue, there is only one. Hopefully another 8910/i7-6700K owner will chime in.

Does the BIOS report the correct information for the i7-6700K (under CPU Information such as Processor Type, Processor ID, CPU Speed)? I have an XPS 8910, but not a K processor.

May I ask kind of an unrelated question, what bios version are you on? Ive been seeing many users brick their 8910 using the new update. I'm currently on 1.1.2 and the newest one says 1.1.5 and not sure if I should even try the update.

I am curious.....do you really need to use a Dell OEM i7-6700K, Part number K991T? Is it different than what I can get from any vendor or does it only come from Dell. I have an 8910 XPS. It would be nice to know if I decide to upgrade.

I think I would ask a different question. Does the OEM version come with a special heat sink/fan? There is no difference in the processors. Because of clearance limits between the CPU and the power supply in the XPS 8910 the OEM version requires a special heat sink/fan or the OEM version may not come with a heat sink/fan in which case that would be a separate part to order. Because of additional cooling requirements, the heat sink/fan for the K version is different than the non-K version.

Good question. gdwrnch3 did you need to upgrade your cooling needs by replacing the processor to the 6700K? Perhaps someone else can chime in. Thanks much.
