XPS 8940, GPU driver updates?

XPS 8940

XPS 8940

I would like to know if I should update this, I keep getting notifications.

I currently have:

Intel UHD Graphics 360, driver 6/1/2021.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti, driver 3/16/2023.

I'm not sure why I have both and which is being used or if both are? But just need to know if it's worth updating to the titled driver.

Your PC uses Intel processor and the CPU has built-in Intel UHD graphics natively.  The connectors for these integrated video are located on I/O shield panel.

This is the latest driver for Intel UHD graphics released by Dell https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-sr/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=x6jyd&oscode=wt64a&productcode=xps-8940-desktop

Your machine was configured with a discrete graphics card GTX 1660ti and that should be used as the default connection for your monitor(s).  The connector ports are located at the PCIe slots panel.

This is the latest released driver for your GTX 1660ti https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-sr/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=wr7hf&oscode=wt64a&productcode=xps-8940-desktop

You should keep drivers up-to-date for both performance and security concerns.

Thanks. So for the UHD it says I already have it, but I did both of them, and the dates are still the same as it was, not the dates that are on the the links. Does it matter which connection port I have it in?

Don't worry about the date.  The driver date and the release date are not the same.  You just want to verify if your PC already has the latest driver version.

For example, the GTX 1660ti has driver version 31.0.15.3141, you can check driver version in Device Manager.

It does not mattery which connection port you use, you can update, or reinstall graphics drivers for both.  You can also run Windows updates and check in optional updates next time for any drivers update.

Great.  Don't forget to run Windows updates and checking in optional updates for any remaining drivers.  That will keep your system up-to-date.

@Hevynnly  - You should always have at least one monitor connected to the add-in GTX 1660-Ti card.

At least one additional monitor can also be connected to that same card, as long as the card has the right port(s) available, or you use a video adapter plug.

If necessary, you can connect the second monitor to one of the onboard Intel ports.  Keep in mind the onboard Intel video ports use system memory (add-in cards have their own memory). So PC performance may lag when you use one of the onboard Intel video ports.

You can also get the latest intel driver from Intel updater, and the latest Nvidia driver from Nvidia, once you install the latest Nvidia Driver from Nvidia it will just ask you to update when there are new ones, Dell does re-release the Nvidia drivers typically they are a tad bit behind the Nvidia retail drivers.

If you want you can also go into your system config (uefi bios) and tell the bios that you have the Nvidia card as the primary card but leave GPU detection to AUTO, it will disable the onboard GPU while the Nvidia card is installed.  It will slightly lower your CPU temps and also free up some resources not to mention some applications may get confused about which GPU it should be using.
