Microphone doesn't work after upgrading to windows 10

XPS One 2720

XPS One 2720

I recently upgraded my (old) pc from windows 8.1 to windows 10.  The odd thing is that my internal microphone works fine on Zoom but doesn't detect an audible voice on other applications (nor in the windows tests of the mic).  I'm trying to use it for other apps (language learning etc.) but it won't recognize my voice over at most 10%.  I've done microphone boost, and other things and nothing has worked.  I would hate to have to buy a new pc just because windows 10 is finicky with my old pc.  Any thoughts (that I haven't already tried)?  Many thanks in advance.

When you say upgrade, it implies you might have upgraded within Win 8 to Win 10, rather than a clean Win 10 install. If that is indeed the case, such upgrade is always messy and prone to myriad issues.  If so, backup old data then do a clean OS install will probably fix the issue.

Agree on all points.

Also, I would definitely try a clean install before deciding that the computer was "unrepairable".

Is the correct Input device selected on the Win 10 Sound screen and correct Input volume set?

Is the correct Input device set on  Win 10 App volume screen too?  You may have to change the Input volume to something other than "Default" for each app listed. Input volume is lower setting for each app on the list. (If any of your apps aren't listed, see below.)

If any of your apps aren't listed on the App volume screen  You probably have to give them permission to use the mic on the Win 10 microphone privacy screen:

And at worst, you might need just to buy a USB mic if you can't get the built-in mic to work properly, and not a whole new PC.
