Need Help: Samsung 860 EVO SSD Installation in XPS 420
Hello. I need help installing a Samsung 860 EVO 500GB SSD in a Dell XPS 420. I use the lower drive bays.
No one at Dell, Samsung, or the retailer I bought the drive at can tell me how to install the drive. A conventional 3.5 inch hard drive is fitted into a plastic frame and mounted into the drive bay.
Thank you.

You can use an R494D or Silverstone SDP 09 Adapter.

The 2.5 drive caddy is R494D, and the SATA Y adapter is N701D.

Thank you for your message and for your fast reply.
The image of the adapter in the link you provided shows holes on the side of the adapter. This would not work in the lower drive bays, as hard drives installed there go into a plastic frame first.
Is the adapter you are recommending for the upper Flex Bay?

You need to purchase a 2.5" to 3.5" mounting adapter like this: https://www.newegg.com/p/2RC-001P-00166?Description=2.5%20to%203.5%20adapter&cm_re=2.5_to_3.5_adapter-_-2RC-001P-00166-_-Product
Once you have the adapter mount the SSD to the adapter and then mount the SSD/adapter combination like you would a hard drive into the computer. See the owner's manual on page 132 on how to add a second hard drive. If you have not purchase one, you will also need a SATA data cable. Look at your current hard drive to see whether you need straight or right-angle connectors at the ends of the cable.

The holes in the sides of the adapter are supposed to be similar to the holes in the sides of a 3.5" hard drive. The adapter mimics a hard drive as far as the mounting configuration is concerned except that the adapter does not have bottom mounting holes like a hard drive. The holes are threaded and can take screws just like a hard drive. Mounting the adapter should be like mounting a hard drive, you attach the adapter to the hard-drive bracket just like you would attach a hard drive to the hard-drive bracket. The holes in the bottom of the adapter are for mounting the SSD. Here is another adapter that allows mounting the SSD using the side mounting holes vs. the bottom mounting holes: https://www.newegg.com/p/1B0-00D7-00003?Description=2.5%20to%203.5%20adapter&cm_re=2.5_to_3.5_adapter-_-9SIACJF54D3097-_-Product
I am not familiar with the Flex Bay but isn't it 5.25"? If it is 5.25" this adapter will not work.

Thank you for your detailed and informative response.
The Amazon link you included shows a part that is available from China for $21.98. The Dell OEM part (R494D) is available new on eBay for less than $10.
All my best to you and your family.
Best regards,
Robert
