Studio XPS 435T, speaker setup help

Question

I have a Studio XPS desktop and want to connect external speakers to it. (BTW I have an Acer monitor). The monitor has a light green audio output cable and the speakers have a thin black cable. On the back of the desktop there are 6! plug ins for sound. Egads, which slot do I plug in the green cable from the monitor and where the black cable from the speakers? Nothing has worked. The speakers have power (the green light is on), but I cannot get any sound from them.  The only sound comes from the internal speakers only, the AMD HDMI Output. There are also choices for Realtek Digital Output (Optical) and Realtek HDMI Output, as well as the Speakers/Headphones which say they are 'ready' but the AMD HDMI Output has the checkmark beside it. I have tried switching to the Speakers/Headphones without success.  Can anyone please help me?  I am not that savvy about computers, so remember that when you reply.

The other way to address this would be to convert the HDMI to VGA and Audio. https://www.amazon.com/Active-Adapter-Benfei-Converter-Gold-Plated/dp/B01KLKQN9U   It may also mean you have to uninstall and reinstall manually the Realtek Audio Driver. This is not a one size fits all for all models all os versions etc. Which version of windows? Which Specific Model Studio XPS? 32 or 64 Bit. This is confusing. Are you saying that the Acer monitor has its own internal speakers? And that you also have some external speakers?
