Hi Georgie01,

Thanks for posting.  Apologies that your system and the VR headset are not working as you may have expected.

Since the Oculus Rift was not tested with this particular model, and was tested with the Alienware laptops, we don't have a definitive answer for your question.

I was able to locate a short video you may find helpful:

Dell Inspiron Not Working On Oculus Rift FIX

and an article here.

If the system is under warranty, please contact me privately. Be sure to include your personal information (name, address, telephone, email) and your computer's service tag number in your message. Thanks.

If there is no warranty, then you could contact our Out of Warranty team to get a quote for a paid service call -http://dell.to/1vnT6CQ

I’m after something a bit more concrete here, to be honest.

Here’s what Dell says about this machine:

Dell Puff says compatible.JPG

The link is here.

https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell-desktop-computers/xps-27-touch/spd/xps-27-7760-aio/fdcwduckbl404daos

The PC was bought on this basis of this compatibility. I can’t be the only customer in this situation.

I can go out and buy another bit of kit (£54 from the obvious supplier, with more for a power supply, and more again for an additional HDMI cable). Before I do that, I’d like to know if this has been shown to work, as your example doesn’t relate to the XPS 7760. Maybe Dell could try this first? Alternatively, I’d like guidance on whether there is any software fix that might point the XPS at the dedicated graphics card when it should be using it.

Yes, the machine will be covered by warranty, but someone else would need to take this forward as the PC was a gift. I’m coming to the conclusion that this isn’t about the XPS not working, but a question of it being wrongly described by Dell. Would you expect this issue to be covered by warranty?

Don't know if this can actually be done on this PC model, but...

Open Device Manager and double-click the Intel HD Graphics 530 entry. Look for the option to "disable" it on one of the tabs. Disable it, exit Device Manager and reboot.

Does that help?

Thanks, RoHe. I'm not a techie here. If I disable the integrated graphics, what are the consequences for all the apps that run off the Intel graphics? And if the monitor disappears, how do I reverse the process? And does this get me into the territory of buzzing sounds and colour distortion that I’ve found when I google this stuff?

Did you see my post of 2 days ago, dell-robert-p?

Any other ideas from Dell here? This is a new PC, bought on the basis that Dell claims it offers 'an ideal VR experience with either the HTC Vive or Oculus Rift'.

The Dell response to problems so far is: ‘Since the Oculus Rift was not tested with this particular model, and was tested with the Alienware laptops, we don't have a definitive answer for your question.’

That is really unimpressive. If the Rift hasn’t been tested with this model, how come Dell continues to sell it as compatible? Is it or isn’t it compatible? And if it is compatible, surely Dell can suggest a course of action that I can follow that’ll sort this out?

A link to a possibly-maybe solution that might just possibly work but you don't know and no one's ever tested it on this machine but someone somewhere did it once on a different model and it'll cost me a fair bit of cash to buy the kit I need to experiment... That is a VERY poor level of support.

I am a little confused by your post in that you say you connect the 3 USB connectors.  Doesn't the headset have 2 USB and one HDMI connector?  If you have an extra sensor, maybe wait to plug that in until the system is configured.

Make sure you are using the output HDMI port, if you have two.

I am using a Windows Mixed Reality headset on an Inspiron 15 7567 which does not have a discreet HDMI output and it seems to work fine.

I will check the 7760 to see if I notice anything that might effect your situation.

I presume most apps can/will automatically switch to the add-in video card, which is probably what you want them to use anyway for best performance. I doubt "the monitor disappears".

What does "buzzing sounds and colour distortion" have to do with the Rift headset...?

And FYI, we had Thanksgiving in US yesterday. Some people may have been out this whole week, and now Dell offices are closed until Mon...

I also notice there is a patch for the Oculus software so we can assume you have installed that?

You do only have the one HDMI output and the other output is Display Port.

This model also has hardware-switchable graphics - be sure you have swtiching graphics turned OFF in setup.  The OR device requires a discrete GPU hardwired to it  - it will not work properly with hybrid video.

One more thing, if you haven't already tried, the system does have Thunderbolt 3... Maybe a Thunderbolt USB C to HDMI converter...

I was looking around and saw a couple of suggestions.  The first, where the no HDMI problem was happening, suggested switching to the Display Port connection using a converter (DP to HDMI).  If you have already tried this, hopefully the adapter used was of sufficient quality.

The second situation the poster decided the USB power was insufficient and got a Vive powered splitter box and sit up the Oculus through that.  Maybe some type of external, powered USB hub would do the same.

Did the Dell folks you spoke with about the headset not being tested, indicate someone would be doing that?

Sorry, I did not see any specific reference to the 7760 regarding this.

I will give you this link but it is not a Microsoft or Dell site, so be careful.

And I don't know if this is related to your situation, but you might check.

Have you been able to attach a normal monitor using the HDMI output?  There were some comments in a Win 10 update which mentioned problems with external HDMI monitors..

I see you tried the Thunderbolt.

  1. Open Control Center
  2. Select "Manage 3D Settings" under 3D Settings
  3. Click "Program Settings" tab and select which program on the drop down list you want to choose the graphics card for
  4. Now select your "preferred graphics processor" on the drop down list
