XPS 420, CPU upgrade?
My Dell XPS 420 has all the original parts it came with 13 years ago. Would it be possible to install an Intel i5 processor on this 13 year old computer? I'd appreciate all the help I could get. Thanks in advance.

ever do this>? (dell does not do CPU QVL lists, they DO NOT) only what they sold new, is told, not ALL.
you seem very confused, (see what 1200 folks used yet, this is REAL)
the 420 mobo is NOT CORE i3-i7 MOBO, at all it is CORE2. relic.
ever read the dell.com spec page, here it is.
new 2007 . (old)

Not possible. Core 2 Quad with bios A07

Core 2 Extreme QX6850 SLAFN Dell Precision T3400 XPS 420 630I 720
This is Socket 775 motherboard.
There are other issues with this old model.
Not worth spending money on a Vista machine from 2007 that needs $100 just for the windows 10 home license.
A machine with I5 can be had for less than the $199 pro licence.

Agree that it is not prudent to spend any significant $ on new cpu, but if you have an original core 2 duo, and you really want to hold on to this LGA775 socket relic to run modern Win 10, you could just get a core2 quad Q6600 for <$8 and consider it a modest upgrade. no need to get core2quad Q9650, not worth it. For internet, email or casual light gaming that do not demand much cpu power. forget about i3 and above.

quad core Q6600 and duo core E8400 both work in XPS420. You can google Q6600 vs E8400 to decide on your own whether either cpu is better than your original.
