XPS 8300, ASUS GeForce GT 730 work?
Hi Community,
Old Dell U2412Mb monitor power unit failed and monitor is not usable any more. I wonder if it can be fixed as it is a good monitor.
Nevertheless, I bought a new monitor HP M27FQ (60Hz - 75Hz refresh rate and 2560 x 1440 mx resolution). I connected it with the Dell XPS 8300 desktop using HDMI cable. The desktop came with originally installed AMD Radeon HD 6670 graphic card. I thought that in order to get full potential of the HP M27fq monitor, I should upgrade the graphics card.
So, I bought an ASUS NVIDIA GEFORCE GT 730 2GB DDR5 graphic card and installed it in one of the PCI-EX1 slots, but the monitor does not display (monitor is turned on and the power light is on) The ASUS GTX730 graphic card does not need separate power supply from the mother board. I tried PCI-EX1_2 and PCI-EX1_3 slots and the card is not seemingly functioning. To test the slots, I installed the WiFi card and it works. So, the slots are good, monitor is turning on, but the GTX730 card is not doing it's job.
The only thing that I can think of is to download the GTX730 driver manually and install it. For that I will have to keep GTX730 on one of the PCI-EX1 slot and Radeon HD 6670 on PCI-E1_16x1 installed and connect a second monitor using HDMI or VGA to download the GTX730 driver. Do you think it is worth trying or do you think I should try something else or GTX730 is just not compatible with XPS8300? In such a case which graphic card is compatible with XPS 8300 motherboard and can also put HP M27FQ monitor to it's full potential use?
HP M27FQ monitor has 2 HDMI and 1 Display ports. So, I prefer a graphic card that has HDMI and/or DP output ports. I can use a VGA to HDMI or HDMI to VGA adapter as well if the choices are limited, but I do not prefer this.
Thanks.

Dell PCs typically won't use a video card installed anywhere other than in the x16 slot.
Don't know if that card will work in the x16 slot...

That card should fit in the X16 slot. I have a GT 730 made by EVGA, it has a small fan, it is very quiet and has been a good little card since 2016. It is actually still in use. It also has the X16 interface, so if you're unsure about compatibility I would look into a card that has the X16 interface.

< Can ASUS NVIDIA GEFORCE GT 730 2GB DDR5 graphic card be installed on Dell XPS 8300?
Yes.
My notes for the Vostro-460 (same as XPS-8300) says ...
I installed an old GeForce-7300-GT (2-DVI, Passive-HeatSink and no PCIe Power required). Works fine.
Check your BIOS options.

Thanks Tesla. Attached is the screen shot of current BIOS from my system. Does the BIOS need an update? If yes, how do I update it and what BIOS option should be set to?
What do I need to do beside updating the BIOS to make the DDR5 GT 730 work on XPS 8300? Is that a most / last upgrade of a GPU for an XPS 8300? If not, then please suggest some. I prefer GPUs with DP or HDMI output ports.
I could not find your notes / post your referred in your previous answer.
Thanks for taking the interest.

A GPU in any x1 slot certainly won't work because all the card's pins aren't connected anywhere. So that's your problem.
Just boot with only the new GPU installed in the x16 slot. Windows should use a "generic" video driver so you shouldn't have any problems booting. Then install the new driver, if Windows doesn't do it automatically for you.

Thanks RoHe,
Here is the card that I am trying to install in x1 slot :

This one will not go inn the x16slot. Let me know what you think.

Thanks Kras and RoHe.
So, I am back to my original question. So, one option is to find x16 version of GT 730 with a DP and HDMI port which I think is available as Kras mentioned. Are there other GPUs (PCIE x16 compaatible and a DP and/or HDMI ouput port) that will be the top upgrade for an XPS 8300 motherboard?

The video card you are looking at should work fine in an X16 slot. How big is your power supply? Do you have any extra power cables for a video card? If you are unsure about those 2 questions, I would stick with the GT730 or even a GT1030 and make sure that you are getting the GDDR5 versions. They are low power cards and they need no extra power cables. If you aren't going to be doing any gaming or serious video editing, either of those 2 cards should serve you well.

@DellUser2012 - You can look at what GPU's are being used in the XPS 8300, as reported on userbenchmark.com.
Just check the PSU recommendations for any card that might be of interest. The stock XPS 8300 PSU is 460W. Don't think the stock PSU has a PCI-e power cable for a GPU, so that limits you to cards that don't require that extra power connection directly to the PSU.

Hi,
I guess I was wrong before. Thanks for correcting me Kras and RoHe. I installed ASUS GT 730 (PCI Express v2.0, 2GB, GDDR5, passive heat sink, 4 HDMI ports) in XPS 8300 PCI Express16 slot and it is working fine. Once I installed the card and started the computer, the display was at a very low resolution, but the system took a little bit of time to install t he correct driver by itself without my intervention. I did, however, later installed the updated driver from manufacturer's (ASUS) website.
The HP M27FQ monitor is working fine at 75HZ and 1440P.
I looked for GT1030 as well, but, could not find a GDDR5 version with passive heat sink and HDMI and DP ports. There is one by Gigabyte or MSI, but it is not available at the moment.
Thanks for all the help every one!

Didn't want to crash the party but I got curious why no one is telling OP that the GeForce GT 730 is not an upgrade from the AMD Radeon 6670. Here is a comparison from UserBenchmark.
If OP feels the XPS 8300 is still viable enough and wanting to invest into it, the best possible upgrade for this machine is GeForce GTX 1650 super. More powerful cards will work too but some may require a PSU upgrade accordingly. OP can review a full machine specs and possible upgrades here.

Thanks Chino. I guess what I am looking for is the feature/capability rather than the performance. As I mentioned in my original post that my old Dell U2412M (60Hz, 1080p) monitor PSU died and I bought a new HP M27FQ monitor (60-75Hz and max resolution 1440p). Radeon 6670 needed be replaced in XPS 8300 as it was not capable to give 1440p output to the new monitor. Limitation of GPU choices is restricted by PCI v2.0 slots.
I got ASUS GT 730 for CAD $125. While GT 1050Ti and higher are CAD $125 more. XPS 8300 will retire anyway sometime after 2025 once Windows 10 support will discontinue.
I could use GT 1050Ti or higher (or like you said GT1650) on a PCIex16 v2.0 slot, but putting them in an old XPS 8300 is economically questionable as the computer is not used heavily for gaming anyway.
I hope this makes sense.
Thanks.

I was addressing to this question: Are there other GPUs (PCIE x16 compaatible and a DP and/or HDMI ouput port) that will be the top upgrade for an XPS 8300 motherboard?
For graphics, if you don't mind shopping from the bay, for 125 cad, you can get many better options, including 4K playback.
For investing into the 8300, I suggest not to pour money into it. Only get replacement parts for repair or to meet certain needs.
