XPS 8500, message Reboot and select proper boot device

My XPS 8500 from 2012 with Win 7 Home Premium 64bit OS, 16 gig of RAM was working just fine until trying to boot up this morning. Went through the thorough diagnostics and it found no errors, everything checked out, took about 3 hours to complete. Checked bios and date/time are correct and updating. Went through the set up utility and it recognizes the HDD and has it as the first boot device. Checked all connections and dusted interior of the machine. Any reboot gives the same message. I thought perhaps the HDD has died but since it passed the diagnostic, I'm not sure what to think. HDD make the standard noise when turning on, no ticking, beeps or anything other than light whirring sound. Any ideas what could be going on?

It is possible that the HDD is corrupted and will not boot. Do you have a bootable CD, DVD, or USB you can try? If not you can try downloading a Linux distribution ISO like Ubuntu and burn a bootable CD, DVD, or USB.

Yep, thinking its corrupted too.  Unfortunately it is the only computer with a CD/DVD drive and I can't find my boot disk that I made years ago. Do you think it may be accessible with a connector to hook it up as an external drive?

Just trying to think of ways that I can access the data since its time to replace the PC anyway, wasn't eligible for a Win10 upgrade.

Thanks for you help.

Thanks, certainly going to give it a try.  Back to new PC shopping

@tomldtx- Why do you say your XPS 8500 "wasn't eligible for a Win10 upgrade."?

There are a number of threads on this forum about running Win 10 on this model and AFAIK:

Windows 7 Keys are still accepted by Windows 10 Version 1903 Installation Media

Gather OS State still works as the activation mechanism for the Upgrade Install:

So if you just buy a new HDD or SSD, you could install Win 10 on it and then reconnect the old HDD to rescue your files. And ultimately reformat that old drive and use it for storage.

Just a thought...

Good idea.  Reason I say it wan't eligible was I ran the Microsoft Win 10 utility that is supposed to tell you if the machine will support Win 10, answer it gave me was no. It was a few years ago so maybe it was saying I couldn't get a free upgrade.  I remember it as machine wouldn't support it.

Going to see if I can access the drive before doing anything else, but if I can access it your idea may be worth a try.  I think 7 years out of a PC isn't too bad and wanted to go to laptop next for travel convenience.

Thanks for the info!

If you want a lappy instead of a desktop, that's a good reason to get something new.

A new HDD is cheap so maybe you could have both...

Umm. This SATA to USB thing isn't a solution. The same error is given when I put in a brand new and formatted hard drive. It even allowed me to fresh install Windows on the new drive. At reboot, the same issue. The Bios options on the XPS 8500 Desktop !

Anyone had any luck fixing this? SATA Controller hardware failure?

@crichter72  -

You need to provide more details about your problem, including the version of Windows.

How do you know it's a "SATA Controller hardware failure"? What error message(s) are you getting, and what have you done to try to fix the problem?

AND, watch your language or you could be put on moderation...

Forgot to "set as active partition" when I initialized and formatted. It prevented the drive from booting correctly. Lowering alert level to DEFCON 2. Thanks, community.
