XPS 8500 problem, Intel GPU, cannot install driver

My Intel Graphics video card disappeared from Device Manager. I cannot install it's drivers. It says "Your system does not meet the minimum system requirements".

If I try to install the Chipset (even though some drivers for the chipset) are already installed it says "File copying failed".

I've tried different versions of the drivers (newest, downloaded from dell website) and old from DVD/CD that came with the computer when I bought it.

But of course until the video adapter appears in device manager, even if it is as unknown device, there is no way you can install the drivers for it.

Please assist.

Please see page 2 for Solution.

What version of Windows and are you using an add-in video card?

Reboot and immediately press F12. Look for option to run Diagnostics and run all of them, including the extended hard drive tests. Copy error messages, if any.

You can also go to Intel's download site and look for a suitable HD Graphics driver for your hardware and version of Windows.

Ron, I've already downloaded the right driver. It cannot be installed because component is not detected.

Version of Windows?

Did either of you recently do a BIOS update from Dell, or install any other software or updates?

You can try this:

  1. Reboot and immediately press F2 to open BIOS setup
  2. Copy down all current BIOS settings
  3. Power off and unplug
  4. Press/hold power button for ~15 sec
  5. Open case and remove motherboard battery (see Service Manual for details)
  6. Press/hold power button for ~30 sec
  7. (Use some canned air to clean out the dust while you're in there.)
  8. Reinstall the battery (time for a fresh one?), and close case
  9. Connect mouse, monitor and keyboard and reboot

If you get any errors after rebooting, go back into BIOS setup and make sure the settings match what you copied. Save the changes -if any- before exiting setup.

Does Intel Graphics appear in Device Manager now?

I tried Factory Reset several times but it did not help. Strange things is that this Factory Reset did not touch my other drive with storage, only the system drive was wiped.

The other thing that you are suggesting, I'm afraid to try. I've never opened my PC. The warranty expired only some 6 months ago.

I'd rather take it to service but I am concerned how much they will charge me for this.

A Reset only resets Windows on the boot drive and shouldn't affect files on any other drive.

Try reinstalling the Intel Chipset driver and Intel HD Graphics video driver. Since neither of you mentioned the version of Windows, go here and select your version of Windows before downloading any drivers. Install the chipset first then reboot and install the HD Graphics driver.

As for resetting BIOS, the instructions to remove the battery are on page 107, here. If you can't do it yourself, maybe you have a geeky friend who can help. Keep in mind I can't promise resetting BIOS will fix this problem.

My OS is Windows 8.1. Excuse me for not mentioning that. I'm bolder with my hardware than the guy who created the topic. Unfortunately, the battery trick did not do any good to the situation on my DELL.

Assuming you have an add-in video card that's working correctly, you may just want to ignore this issue.

And if you have an add-in video card, you could physically remove it from the PC and connect the monitor to one of the on-board video ports to see if that will make Intel Graphics reappear in Device Manager. You have to decide if you want to play around with that or just leave things alone as long as the add-in card is working.

Hi there.

The PC was in authorized DELL service. CMOS battery checked, many things checked - all appears to be fine hardware-wise.

Service guy explained that it must be after some of the Windows updates that the Integrated video has disappeared and normally it should not be visible in Windows unless I remove the GeForce dedicated video. How plausible is that? I can see drivers on DELL website for the integrated? Why would they post drivers if they should not be used?

Please advise. I am very skeptical to accept that the story he gave me is true.

Thanks in advance

The XPS 8500 has the BIOS- Advanced- Intel Multi-Display (Enable or Disable) option. So on this model, you can use both the onboard Intel GPU and the added discrete video card.

Hi there and many thanks.

What is a X16 video card?

Onboard video is disabled by X16 video card.  If you remove the card the Driver will install.  It will "disappear" however when the card is put back because drivers do not load for disabled devices.

Speedstep has the correct answer.  The BIOS will automatically default to the Intel integrated video if no video card is installed.  If a video card is installed the BIOS automatically defaults (selects) the installed Video Card.  If something is disabled (or not detected) in the BIOS, Windows will not detect it.

Is the Intel Multi-monitor option enabled or disabled in BIOS? If it's enabled then integrated video should be visible to Windows and the driver should install.

Hi folks! This was one of the top search results when I was trying to troubleshoot the same issue, & I found a solution, at least for my setup (also XPS 8500 with no Intel graphics displaying under device manager).

Long story short: even if you have a dedicated graphics card installed, simply plug in your display cable (VGA or HDMI) from the motherboard's VGA/HDMI ports to your monitor, restart your computer, and wait a little bit. It may display an error message as it's booting before/after the Dell logo appears, but don't fret, just let it continue loading.

If you're running Windows it may take it a little while to load up, but again, be patient & don't fret. I imagine it takes awhile as Windows figures out what you've changed in your setup & runs its barebones display drivers to ensure everything displays properly.

After you've loaded into Windows again, you can install the Intel graphics drivers as desired & get the various options they provide for adjusting your display. For my particular model with an i5-3450, I found the drivers on Intel's website here: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/download/18606/intel-graphics-driver-for-windows-15-33.html

You'll need to reboot your PC again after installing these drivers, but once done you're all set, & presumably (I haven't verified this myself yet) the Intel HD Graphics option should remain in device manager. If it disappears again, I'd recommend repeating the aforementioned steps to force its reappearance.

Hope this helps any other folks that find themselves here!
