I don't understand "nothing happens".

Are you attempting to use the new SSD as the boot drive?

Sure the SSD is correctly seating in its connection?

Does BIOS see the new SSD?

Did you install Windows on the SSD or clone the HDD onto it and how?

What version of Windows?

Unless you plan on using the discrete graphics card PCIe x16 slot, I'd return the Samsung 970.  Performance-wise it's pointless.  And, even if you use the graphics card PCIe x16 slot, there's no guarantee you'll be able to boot with it.  See thread here for an explanation why and list of SSD formats that work in the Dell XPS 8700.

Everybody tries to push the limit of the older 8000 series PC's with the SSD's. You probably wouldn't see any difference anyway with the fancy new ones.
