XPS 8700, no video on cold start

No video on cold start.

Things I've done. Reseat all components. Replace video card. Check for all updates. BIOS is up to date (A14).

On cold boot, monitor goes right to sleep.
Computer HD light flickers as normal.
No matter how long you leave the computer on, no video appears.
Warm reboot and video displays and computer works normally.

Ran BIOS tests and the only malfunction is the CPU fan speed never changes.

Online Dell tests says everything is OK (complete).

If you didn't hold the power button after removing the battery, do that now and just reinstall the fresh one again. Unless you hold the button, BIOS settings (which may be corrupted) won't get cleared and be set back to defaults...

No promises, but worth trying...

Are you using the onboard graphics or a video card? If you are using a video card try using the onboard graphics. (you may have to turn it on in bios) It sounds like the video drivers aren't being loaded correctly after a cold boot, it might have something to do with the fan error. If you include the model and hardware specs of your PC some of the more knowledgeable members should be able to provide you with a better diagnostic and possible fix.

GT635 graphics card. Tried replacing with different card on cold boot. Nothing.
After being on for 5 minutes, reboot works and all works fine.
i7 4770 cpu. 24 gig RAM.

No guarantee it will help, but the cheapest remedy available is to replace your CR2032 coin cell battery, to eliminate that as a possible problem. The as yet unidentified rig appears to be vintage, like a fine wine.

@vandenmike  - Always include exact PC model and version of Windows in your posts.

When was last time the motherboard battery was replaced? I'd start there if it's more than a couple of years old. Likely a CR2032 coin cell, ~$2, if nothing else than to rule it out...

How do you shutdown? Try a diff method such as right click on Start button and select Shutdown--if that's different.

Tried a new 2032 coin cell before boot this AM. No video.
Switched to onboard graphics. No go.
By the third try, it booted up and told me I have a graphics card.....

Works fine after start, shut down and restart.

What type video port are you using on PC and on monitor?

You can't use any of the onboard video ports while an add-in video card is installed. You have to physically remove the add-in card before you can use an onboard port.

Can you test this monitor and cable on a different PC or different monitor and cable on this PC?

@vandenmike   BTW: Did you press/hold the power button on PC for ~30 sec after removing the old battery, before you installed the new one?

No
