XPS 8700, power button does not work

I have read some of the posts and have some progress.  Currently my power button will not turn on the system.

If I unplug the power cord and press the button for 10 seconds, then plug the cord back in , it will start.  However, so far I have to do that every time I want to turn on my PC.

Ideas?

My Dell XPS 8000 is running just fine now.

  1.  I replaced the PSU and the desktop started up again.  So, indeed, the original PSU was defective.
  2.  I cleaned the NVIDIA Geforce GTS 240 video card: I removed the protective cover and noticed a pile of dust between de cooling fins.  The dust apparently was the cause of a 'noisy' desktop.
  3.  The Power ON/OFF button was not the problem.
  4.  I started the desktop from one HDD only and have my original desktop and all files back, albeit not in RAID 1 configuration (which I wanted to discard anyway).

I cannot confirm that the clogged video card was the cause of the PSU going defective and/or of the monitor going into Power Safe Mode (PSM) without being able to 'wake' it up again.

Your solution has worked every time since discharging whatever electricity was preventing boot up.

Thanks for sharing this solution.
