XPS 8700, wireless driver install failure

Hi, I have an XPS 8700 (running Win10 Creators) that SupportAssist advises me to update to a recommended driver Dell Wireless 1703 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0 Version: 10.0.0.318.  Trying to update via SupportAssist the driver downloads but then fails to complete installation and a message “Installation – error” appears. When updating via the Dell support website the driver file downloads OK, however when installing with the Client on the Bluetooth Suite the install bar goes green and the Client locked up and the install failed – I have a log file if helpful.

My desktop is otherwise working fine and I do not use Bluetooth devices only wireless to the router, but I would like to resolve the install error if possible. Have you any ideas please. Regards Paul862

Sorry, my error. :Embarrassed:  You are correct, the latest driver for Win 10 with Wireless 1703 has BT 3.0 and is version .318.

First off, the Win 10 April'18 update (build 1803) must have installed the Microsoft driver v3.0.2.201 based on the hardware it saw during that update.

It's seems likely Qualcomm manufactured the 1703 cards for Dell so it's Qualcomm hardware. And it appears that the Qualcomm driver version number that's installed now is identical to the driver version number on Dell's site, .318.

Search for the BT settings screen in Win 10 and see if you can turn the BT radio on and pair with a BT device, assuming you have or can borrow a BT device, such as a speaker or headphones. If BT isn't found or can't be turned on, you could manually set a System Restore point to be safe and then uninstall the 1703 card driver in Device Manager. Then reboot and see if the .318 from Dell's site will install now.

Creators or April'18 Update to Win 10?

Looking at the Support page for the XPS 8700, the latest Dell Wireless 1703 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth4 driver listed is  v10.0.0.301, last updated in Sept'15.  So I don't know where SupportAssist is getting v10.0.0.318.

First thing to do is open Device Manager and confirm that you actually have a Dell Wireless 1703 card, and not Dell Wireless 1704 or any of the Intel wireless+BT cards listed on the Support page.

And if WiFi+BT are working now, I'd just ignore SupportAssist. And you can always disable SA so it won't be nagging you any more.

Hi Ron,

Thanks for your prompt response. In reply to your question I have Windows 10 Home 1803 OS build 17314.112.

I am most confused now as yesterday Device Manager said that I have a Dell Wireless 1703 802.11b/g/n (2.4Ghz) with a Microsoft driver 3.0.2.201 dated 26/03/2016 now with a Qualcomm driver 10.0.0.318 dated 22/05/2015. Also yesterday Dell Wireless 1703 Bluetooth properties with Qualcomm Atheros driver 10.0.1.7 dated 18/05/2016 now it is not listed in Device Manager.

Looking on Dell Support my original configuration shows I have fitted a Dell Wireless 1703 + BT4.0 [802.11bgn + Bluetooth 4.0, 2.4GHz, 1x1]. This device has not been replaced.

Did SupportAssist tell me to update a wrong driver -  Wireless 1703 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0 Version: 10.0.0.318 (Category – Network) or did it not all install because of the now no mention of Dell Wireless 1703 Bluetooth in Device Manager. Is there another way of checking if the Bluetooth installed. I cannot find the Dell Wireless 1703 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth4 driver you mention, which category is it listed.

 Regards, Paul

Hi Ron,

You truly are a Rockstar. Have managed to pair via BT to my iPhone and the Device Manger driver files are visible as before - Thanks for your assistance.

Glad BT (and presumably WiFi) is working again.

Now disable (or uninstall) Dell SupportAssist and stop  trying to break your PC!  :Stickouttongue:
