XPS 8900, boot issue resolved, unplug mouse
I have a Dell XPS 8900.
Can you help me understand the following problem I had at boot-up this morning. Although it seems to have resolved itself, I'd like to understand whether the symptoms indicate a larger issue.
1. I shut down normally last night. The power light was off.
2. This morning when I pushed the power button, the computer did not boot. Instead, the power light just flashed and continued flashing.
3. I tried unplugging the computer but then symptoms did not change when I plugged in again.
4. I have another computer which is a laptop which I was going to use to research the issue. It has no mouse so I wanted to use mouse from Dell desktop that had the boot problem. It is a wired, USB mouse.
5. When I unplugged the mouse from the XPS, the XPS computer started booting immediately. After it finished, I plugged the mouse in and it is now working fine. I have not tried another shutdown.
6. Can you tell me what the issue might be?
I have latest Windows 10 and Dell desktop updates. I ran Dell diagnostics; it said it found no issues.

I would try it again.
About the only thing I can think of is the mouse was shorting the USB port, and since it works OK that wasn't the problem. If you try it again and its OK, I would consider it just a fluke and not worry. However, if it does it again we are back to square one. Can't imagine a USB device, unless its shorted as noted, causing a no boot.

Thanks. An issue with the mouse being partially unplugged occurred to me too.
I'll try it again, right after I complete my second set of backups!

Could one of the mouse buttons have been stuck in the "pressed" position?
Is it time to retire the rodent, or at least hit it with some canned air?

Possibly, although it is actually new mouse even though it is wired. I've tried wireless mice, but it is unreliable in that some mouse movement was missed. Not sure of the reason. I use good quality Logitech mice. Batteries were fresh

I've booted successfully several times. Either it was a glitch (ie no explanation) or it has something to do with the mouse.

Guess you'll just have to keep an eye on it...
