How does PSU wattage relate to required wattage of a card? In general, if you look at the specs of a discrete GPU card it will suggest a recommended Minimum System Power Requirement in watts. Obviously, this requirement assumes a typical computer configuration that does not have additional devices that may require more power.

Also how do i find the specs of the PSU in my preset Dell Desktop? Assuming your PC still has the original as-built system configuration, you can use the Service Tag to look up the configuration on the Dell support site. Enter your Service Tag and click Search, then on the page that is next displayed, click on 'View product specs' under 'Quick links'. The System Configuration will be displayed and in the list is the part number of the power supply something like 'X94XT' with a description..For the X94XT power supply, it is rated at 460W.

Re: What kind of research do I need to do before I purchase a new graphics card. As well, I have heard that you can buy a card that uses too much wattage for the power supply. How do I avoid that and buy a card that my machine can handle as is?

you can use gpucheck compare gpu to look at average fps of nvidia card at various settings and resolution.

just beware current gpu price is exorbitant.

when you are interested in a nvidia card, use basic online psu calculator to estimate recommended psu wattage and compare with your current psu.

How does PSU wattage relate to required wattage of a card? clearly it should be more but there are other things like the CPU that require power. Also how do i find the specs of the PSU in my preset Dell Desktop?

when you use the basic psu calculator you will see how the card affects the recommended psu wattage.  the calculator takes into account the cpu and other components too.  this appears to be a more accurate power estimate than nvidia recommendation of psu.

besides service tag, another way is to open the case and look at your oem psu label on the psu itself which should tell you maximum output wattage.
