XPS 8920, Firmware TMP

I have a 2017 XPS 8920 with UEFI and Secure Boot enabled. The option for "Firmware TMP is set to "enabled,". But when I run the Microsoft test, it reports NO TMP installed? How do I correct this? The computer is as "up-to-date" as possible.

I have no problem getting into "CMD" as administrator.  But you are giving examples from Win 11, which is apparently different form Win 10.

The XPS 8920 (series) does NOT (apparently) HAVE hardware TPM; that as presumably why the BIOS has a "Firmware TPM" enable/disable option, but selecting "enable" does nothing.

When I try that, the report (and screen) say "TPM not found."

@Larry R.  Did you run all the Windows commands I posted above?

And if they didn't help, did you reset BIOS by removing the motherboard battery and pressing/holding the PC's power button for ~30 sec before reinstalling a fresh battery?

Firmware TPM is in the specifications for the XPS 8920 according to Dell, and IS also indicatred in the (Dell) Service Manual.  (I should make that more than just an "option.")

I'm going to have to wait until after Christmas to do that; family obligations are now "getting in the way," of what would mean taking the computer apart...  No time or space available until early next week.

There apparently is NO hardware TPM in the XPS, the BIOS option says "FIRMWARE TPM" with the options of enable or disable.  It IS enabled.

    "Virtualization" is NOT in use.

Are you looking specifically at the XPS BIOS that was posted earlier?  "Firmware TPM" IS supposedly an option.

Good idea to take a break from this stuff and enjoy your holidays...

TPM is on a chip on the motherboard. It's called "firmware" because it's an updateable chip, the same way BIOS is stored on a different chip that can also be "flash" updated.

Post back and let us know what happens after you clear BIOS by removing the motherboard battery and pressing/holding the power button for ~30 sec. Be good to copy all current BIOS settings before you remove the motherboard battery, to be safe. And as I said, this is probably a good time to install a fresh CR2032 3-volt coin cell (~$2).

Several questions:

Was that user using Home or Pro versions of Win 10?

Was the hard drive MBR or GPT?

Was "BitLocker" in use?

Any or all of those apparently mare "required" for TPM to be installed.

I'll install the new battery(and reset the CMOS)  after Monday.  I am going to install an SSD (500 GB) and don't want to have to open the case twice (it' IS a bit of a chore.)

If MS is trying to "force" Win 11 with it's auto updates to Win 10, maybe it's better to NOT have TMP 2.0...

  • TPM can be used with either Win 10 Home or Pro.
  • You don't need BitLocker enabled to enable TPM. They do different things.
  • GPT vs MBR shouldn't have any effect on enabling TPM. GPT has more flexibility than MBR, in terms of max drive size, number of partitions on a drive, etc.
  • BIOS must be set to use UEFI and Legacy ROM Options must be disabled before TPM can be enabled.

MS isn't forcing the update to Win 11. Once it decides your system is compatible, it will offer Win 11 to you. You have to click the offer button, and then you have to confirm you want the update on the next screen. So you have to take 2 steps to launch the update. You can still cancel on that second screen.

And yes, if TPM isn't enabled, WU won't offer Win 11...

All suggestions are exhausted.  System Info says TPM binding is not possible.  I had to reset the computer, and all log-ins were lost; it's no longer worth the time, effort, and frustration of trying to use a computer that may be a Dell defect or reject.
