XPS 8930 CD drive replacement

Intermittently Windows CD drive doesn't work -- Device Manager says "Currently, this hardware device is not connected to the computer. (Code 45)". Restarting sometimes makes it work. Problem is becoming more and more frequent. I updated from Windows 10 to 11 to see if maybe a driver or setting was the problem. Still have same issue so I am thinking I should replace the drive. Where can I get a replacement drive? I can get a Dell Slim USB drive 429-AAUX for $40 -- can I take out the guts and install in the desktop?

No, I would not recommend that (I doubt it will work anyway). You would buy the correct slim drive and replace it.

However, I've found that those slim-tray drives are fragile and only for low-volume use.

I used to burn a bunch of discs (CD, DVD, BD) back in the day. I found it is better to use a real name-brand 5.25-inch burner (like a LG with Burn-Proof and M-Disc ) . Since modern desktops are smaller (and optical tech is being depreciated) , I like to now install in a nice external USB-3.0 enclosure like an OWC Mercury Pro. I have that setup on my desk right now and it works fine.

Actually, if you just want to burn/rip CDs and DVDs (no Bluray-Discs) ... here is a full-sized 5.25-inch (ie durable) external-USB LG Burner ready to plugin and go.

you can try to get a correct odd as suggested by Tesla.  what means by “correct” is probably genuine Dell oem odd for XPS 8930.  Get the DP/N from list below then look on eBay or Amazon for a new replacement part.  You can keep using the bezel of the original odd.  If you think you may need a blue ray drive but you do not have one now, this may be a good time to consider the upgrade oem option.

Did you check the SATA data cable connections for optical drive at motherboard (white SATA port) and at the drive itself? Or try using an available black SATA data port? (Blue SATA data port is for a bootable HDD.)

Did you check the SATA power connection from the PSU?

Have you run diagnostics on the optical drive? Put a data CD, not a commercial audio CD, or any DVD, in and close the drive. Reboot PC and tap F12 to open the menu. Run diagnostics and test the optical drive. NOTE: If you don't already have a CD in the drive when you launch the diagnostics, the drive will probably fail even if it's actually ok.

Since it's an intermittent problem, could this be a Power plan issue?  Open Advanced Settings screen for your active Windows Power plan. On that screen, disable hibernation, hybrid sleep, and PCI-Express Link State Power Management. Save the settings and reboot.

You may want to see if any of that helps before replacing the drive...

@redxps630

@Dell-BradL

None of RedXPS obfuscated links points to actual ebay or amazon.

SNLOOKUP  DOT COM is an XSS Malware Site Stealing Service Tags as well as https:// logins from the forum.

If you are going to link an Item then Link an Actual Buy not XSS malware clickbait.  BU40N for example on Amazon which takes you to amazon DIRECTLY not via XSS stopping on snlookup first.  The user never sees this unless they right click copy the RedXPS link to see where it goes to on the disingenuous MALWARE Buy or Check Price Links.

snlookup. com SerialNumberDetectionTool.exe is part of the problem.

An XSS attack is possible when an attacker uses a vulnerable website or web application to inject malicious code which is stored and later automatically served to other users who visit the web page. It is because this input was not validated before storing and embedding content into HTML responses, that the application is vulnerable via https:// click bait links in your "Check Price" and "Buy" links.

XSS is particularly dangerous because it targets forum https:// links that then steal user credentials and
other sensative content (Service TAGS)(User Logins,Passwords) into their database.  So forums, youtube, facebook, etc with enabled comments, web-based email servers or clients,
or any other type of website where users are tricked into clicking a non secure link "Check Price" and "Buy" links OUTSIDE the forum.

If the user has persistent login to Amazon and Ebay snlookup tries to steal these credentials/cookies as well.
