XPS 8930, alternative cooling solution, 8700k delid
I was bored and delidded my 8700k. got an oc (with throttlestop) to 5.0ghz and it hit 72c tops running cinebench r15 (ambient was around 24c) with a 212 evo for cooling. Looking through some of these posts, this seems way more practical than what looks like the hours and hours of modification it took some of the people in these posts. It cost me $12 for the tool and $13 for the paste and maybe an hour and a half (most of it spent cleaning the pcb on the cpu). Just do it, it's easy and you're likely out of warranty by this point anyway.

The problem with ALL Liquid cooling solutions is Silica Drop out over time. Ethylene Glycol A colorless syrupy alcohol, HOCH2CH2OH, used as an antifreeze/boil/corrosion in cooling systems.
This causes goo to build up and eventual failure and leaks.
Silicates are abrasive in a cooling system, and cause water pump seal failure.Organic Acid Technology or OAT's are coolants that are formulated without the use of silicates. They don't use this in coolers because its more expensive and they dissolve plastic seals. Common components to OAT coolants are Carboxylate, sebacate, and 2-ethylhexanoic acid (2-EHA), which are corrosion inhibitors, used instead of silicates.
Either way over time the coolant tends to turn to a thick, gooey, sticky, muddy, gritty, corrosive gel.
Antifreeze additives get too concentrated in the coolant, then the excess phosphate and/or silicate would “drop-out” of the coolant. These “drop-out” problems cause premature water pump failures, radiator blockages, heatsink cooling problems and must be cleaned and the coolant replaced with distilled water and coolant. The Dex Cool product breaks down plastic seals so this is not a solution.

I use automotive Flush with hot water OUTSIDE the case FAR AWAY from the motherboard in the kitchen sink.
Green GOO dropout will always be a problem.
Other coolants degrade plastic fittings causing corrosion and cracking.

what software do you use for this? i tried argus and speedfan but no luck. or do you mean a hardware controller?

Hardware:
If using the Nocuta LP cooler, fix the speed of the 15mm slim fan by connecting it directly to the PSU. Use the LNA adapter to reduce noise as desired. That Noctua fan is an amazing fan and does pretty well keeping up with standard 25mm 120mm fans.

I did this with the H60 cooler and the radiator fan being fixed to the PSU rather than off the CPU FAN 4 pin PWM header.. Dropped temps a lot.
Remember you have to have the TOP FAN and CPU FAN headers being used in order to avoid a startup error.

Would NOT recommend this older Intel CPU cooler for the Dell XPS 8930 or Alienware Aurora because installation onto a 1151 socket requires a specific backplate be installed behind the motherboard to couple the CPU pump bracket for installation. Video is on the link Speedstep provided above.
The preferred way to install an AIO cooler is to buy a unit that is socket 1151 ready where the double sided pins holding down the pump bracket install in the existing holes on the motherboard. No modifications needed.
Edit: see next post for updated info the Intel cooler. It will install fine, however there are differences in the way this unit gets power versus newer models.

Update on the Intel BXTS13X AIO cooler.
The Intel Cooler should install on the Dell LGA 1151 socket without having to use the backplate: However, the way the pump power and fan power is shown as a single 4 pin connector which connects to the CPU FAN header. The pump speed is still fixed at 100% as it ignores the PWM signal and passes that signal to the fan and the fan speed varies with CPU temps. The fan speed is what is reported by the tach cable on the 4 pin connector on this Intel model. This differs from current models where the pump is running at a fixed 100% speed from a separate power source and the fan is controlled by the 4 pin CPU fan header.
Did look at one close up and the installation method looked a lot like another older Asetek AIO cooler (545LC) that I worked with before. Same toothed ring mechanism, same 180 degree rotation of the bracket corner to change the location of the mounting hole depending on the installation type. Same rotational locking of the pump to the bracket. There is no lock ring like the 545LC to attach the pump to the bracket ahead of time so you have to leave the screws loose to fit the pump in place on the bracket before tightening it down. It does install fine however.
1) The screws used to hold down the pump bracket have the same M3 thread on the Dell motherboard LGA1151 socket.
2) The screws have a metal stop ring at the correct depth so you cannot overtighten the screws on the bracket onto the motherboard.. Once that stop ring contacts the top of the motherboard (or is snug), it's mounted correctly.
It is an older design, but the older Asetek unit I installed is still working fine. The newer units have a slimmer radiator, 27mm vs 37mm on this Intel unit (so will work with slim 15mm fan only in the XPS 8930), and pump power is via SATA to the PSU with a separate tach cable which can show pump speed.

Just a small update. I think I've decided to go the aio route. I still have the l12-s on the way, and I'm still gonna give it a shot and I'll report back what temps I get, but I have a feeling it's not gonna cool as well as something like an h60 or evga clc 120. So with that in mind, I thought it would be a good idea to help the vrm as much as possible, as there wont be an air cooler throwing air around over it. So if anyone is in the market for part number J46J2, it's available for purchase from dell for $5. There's a guy on ebay trying to sell them for 30 bucks, so...don't do that.

finally got some numbers. this little project has shown me two things. the l12-s is a beast and the 8930 case is horrible. with everything crammed in and the side panel on, i went for an oc of 5.0ghz @ 1.24 volts and hit around 73-75c after 10 mins of the aida64 cpu stress test (temps werent changing much after this). with the side panel off and the psu swung fully open, i was staying around 62-63c. i've never seen a case have this drastic an impact on thermals. as you can see, i threw a couple of more front intake fans in there, one on full blast and one connected to the cpu header (the noctua was connected to the psu with the provided LNA and was at a steady 1400). i didnt connect the noctua to the cpu header because whatever curve the motherboard has is way too conservative and temps were getting too high, too quickly. at 1400, the noctua is actually still pretty quiet.
tl;dr
5.0ghz oc @ 24c ambient:
case closed 73-75c
case open/psu arm fully extended 62-63c
using a noctua l12-s @ 1400rpm and two crappy cooler master case fans that i found lying around that i used for front intake, on a DELIDDED 8700k.
not sure why these are showing up sideways, but this is what the cooler looks like inside the case. as you can see, i cut some stuff to make cables more manageable

eh i dont even know if i'd call this sff. it fits an atx psu. the configuration is just so dumb. there are cases this size that put the psu above or below the motherboard -- voila. problem solved.

haha no worries. when i hear sff, i think of the stuff optimum tech does. and at MOST, something the size of an nzxt h200. bigger than that, i think you're in midtower territory. i just found a case called a darkflash dlm22 that is pretty much the same size of the 8930 case, but with what looks to be way better airflow (as much as you can get with a closed front panel, at least). thinking of doing a case swap. but honestly, if i do that, i'll probably just get another motherboard (specifically, msi mpg z390m).

Not really because all that stuff would be in there anyway, the problem is they didn't put one more big fan in to make up for the odd design. My fan addition keeps it quiet and 92* F at the top is the hottest it's ever been.

UPDATE:
Alright, last post. It's been fun. Here's where I am now. This little guy runs fast, cool, and quiet. And it looks really good (imo) too. Ditched the Dell case and proprietary Z370 and went with an MSI MPG Z390M and moved it all to a darkFlash DLM22 and threw in some Corsair LL120s because why not (used to hate RGB, now I can't get enough). My recommendation after all this is to, frankly, just not buy a Dell (unless you find one for dirt cheap on craigslist like I did). Their case configuration is just so wacky, to the point it hinders the performance of the components. Anyway, here are some pics. It's been a pleasure engaging with this community.
