XPS 8930, front combo port mic problem

Hallo everyone,

In the user guide of the xps 8930, it is stated that the front headphone/speaker port works with the headphone/mic combo headsets.

However, when connecting my headset, only the headphone works. The microphone is not working.

I tested the headset on 2 laptops and the microphone works normally on them.

Any idea ?

Its correct but misleading.  If you have a headset/mic combo the "headset" portion will work in that slot but not the mic.

The front Headphone/Speaker jack is for either headphones (but not combo with mic) or computer speakers.

Next to the Headphone/Speaker jack is a separate jack for Microphones.

Both the Headphone/Speaker and Microphone jacks accept standard "TRS" (Tip, Ring Sleeve) Stereo plugs.

Combination Headphone/Mic units with one connector (usually a TRRS) require an adapter that separates the plug to two TRS plugs, one for the Headset/Speaker jack and the other for the microphone jack.

Thanks fireberd

Your post is logic although the user guide for the Xps 8930 says:

3. Headphone/speaker port

Connect headphones, a headset (headphone and microphone combo), or speakers.

Seems to be a mistake in the guide!

Gonna buy the adapter and check.

After getting a splitter, everything worked as it should.

I had the same issue on my Precision 3630.

You have to use the MaxxAudio Pro software the comes installed with Dells. Search for it in the start menu. Once launched, click on the first box (head side view with the headphones at the top-left of the window), then on the bottom middle, below the equalizer, where it says "Select Output Device" make sure to select "Headset".

When you do that, the image on the third box will change from the desktop mic to the headset with the mic and the microphone should be enabled now.

You should be able to test the sound levels and adjust the volume in that third box.

You can also enable the little window that pops up when you plug headphones in.

Hope this works for you.
