XPS 8930, no memory detected error

Hi,

I have a 2 year old out of warranty Dell XPS 8930. I recently purchased 2 x 8Gb Dell branded RAM using the ‘memory upgrade’ option on the Dell website for my system, so it should be the right RAM. It does look the same as the original 8 Gb card. I assumed I static fried the original RAM when checking it to see what to buy as it didn’t work when I put it back (hence buying two new ones). However I was more careful when installing the new RAM, using an anti static wristband etc.

With the new RAM installed, it’s not getting past POST and is giving a repeated 2 flash amber light which the manual says means there’s no RAM installed. I get this whether one chip (in DIMM 1), two chips (in DIMM 1 & 2) or even the original chip (in DIMM 1) are installed.

I’ve also tried removing the battery for ten minutes and replacing it but still get the same error.

Does anyone have any ideas? Dell ‘out of warranty’ support were useless and cut me off as soon as I’d explained the problem

many thanks for any help

@Threepymeepy I think I would closely examine all the connections to the motherboard and also look for any damage in the vicinity of the RAM slots. Also, you should check to make sure the RAM modules are fully and properly seated in the slots. According to the Service Manual, 'press the memory module straight until it snaps into position and the securing clips lock in place'. Note that sometimes in order to get the memory module to snap into place may require more force than you might expect. The 2 LED flashes do indicate 'No memory or RAM detected'.

@Threepymeepy  - If you put the original RAM back in, is it detected and PC boots properly?

Just because it "look the same as the original" doesn't mean anything. You probably should verify with Dell that they shipped the right modules...

Thanks for replying

I did check all the other connections but nothing seems loose. The RAM is definitely seated securely with the clips in place.

No, I get the same error whether the new or original RAM is installed.

the sticker on on all three modules says:

8GB 1RX8 PC4-2666V-UA2-11

Have you tried clearing BIOS?

  1. Power off, unplug
  2. Press/hold power button for ~15 sec
  3. Open case and remove motherboard battery (check Service Manual for details)
  4. Press/hold power button for ~30 sec
  5. Install original RAM module in second slot from CPU
  6. Reinstall battery (Time for fresh CR2032 3-volt coin cell battery? ~$2)
  7. Close up and connect mouse, monitor and keyboard
  8. Reboot

If that works, repeat the same process but install new RAM at step 5.

If none of that helps, remove all RAM and reboot. You should hear 2 (or 4) beeps from the tower. If no beeps, suspect a motherboard failure. And In that case, and PC is under warranty, contact Dell Tech Support.
