The other option that still works if you can find it is USB to firewire WITH  Dazzle adapter that is very hard to find now. Its usb to firewire.

The other software issues like moviemaker missing and directx 9,10,11 missing and OHCI firewire legacy driver still apply.  This is NOT a water chicken install or a single step or single reboot to working.

If you cant get the Dazzle interface to work buy a legacy model like optiplex GX620 tower with XP installed and then download directx june 2010 runtimes and install then install the software.

I would think that NONE work due to PCI-E 2.0  vs PCI-E 3.0 Line code issues as well as there being NO support for firewire anymore from both Apple and Microsoft.   They had a falling out over driver royalties with texas instruments ( the patent holder).

The response was to remove all support for it in MACOS as well as windows.  Only Legacy systems work now with firewire.  There are ZERO certificates in bios for the driver as well as the hardware. There are ZERO DCH drivers which is also an issue.  The last nail in the coffin was removing windows live tools aka Movie maker and Directx 9, 10, 11 from windows by default.  They also removed the installer for Windows Live Essentials 2012.

The Startech card Is what I would recommend trying but I'm not optimistic that it will load without security override and bios update to allow PCI-E  2.X line code 8b/10b for the card.  Some Newer Dell Precision Models have specific slots that are PCI-E 2.x for just that reason.

Legacy Driver is still here

Thanks for the response. I really don't want the possible issues you describe. I have these Mini DV tapes and it seems that all directions as to how to convert them to digital use firewire. The Canon Optura xi doesn't even have such a port but it does have an AV port which I thought I could use at one end to go to firewire on the computer. I didn't want to have these tapes converted commercially because most of the stuff is junk I really don't need. I wanted to edit at the conversion level but that seems to be a lost cause. I'll just have to get them converted and edit later. I had no idea this was going to be so difficult but time marches on and stuff from the 1990s is just junk now.

I already shipped my tapes to a conversion vendor. It's a dead issue. Now what do I do with my $2000 Video camera from the past? I guess I'll just store it with my other old cameras.
