XPS 8950, max memory / mobo question

Hello I ordered a Dell XPS 8950.  I ordered it with 32GB of ram out of laziness (I know should’ve got minimum and ordered aftermarket…anyway).

when customizing my pc I had the option of anything from 8 to 128GB.  When I read the xps 8950 manual, it states I can go up to 128 (albeit at 3600mhz).

in my order (it hasn’t shipped yet I ordered it on the 10th or 11th) it says “32GB DDR5, 2x 16GB, at 4400MHz; up to 64GB.”

Are there multiple 8950 Mobos with some only allowing 64?  I emailed support and support said the machine can only go up to 64 (they have my order number).  However when I “chat” with Dell and give them my number I get conflicting answers   Chat tells me 128.

im close to canceling my order and reordering it again just to be sure (and to go from 32 to 8, and just buy crucial)…I just don’t want to wait another month because it’s showing end of May delivery for new builds

thoughts?  Help?

I believe you answered my question but let me just rephrase to make sure I’m correct;

is the max always 128 or are there some that are 64?  I used the crucial memory tool and it shows 128 as the max as well.  Pretty much everything but the one support email person is pointing to 128.

thank you for your help.

@BrokerRob There may be different revisions (see the XPS 8950 FAQ https://www.dell.com/community/Desktops-Wiki/FAQ-XPS-8950/ta-p/8062085) of the motherboard, but the max memory is 128GB. See the Setup and Specifications.

I think both answers are correct in its own way.  If support person is checking the availability in US region (today), you can only purchase system with max of 64 GB configurations.  If support person is looking at tech specs, the max RAM support is 128 GB.

There are different motherboards for the XPS 8950, you may receive one of these board 0NNYWM, 0R6PCT, 09D2HH, just to name a few.

Edit:  64 GB at 4400 MHz gives you the best performance.

Hi Chino, thanks for the input.  I checked Dell's site; you can buy them with 128 right now, it's just a small fortune to do so.

I'm going to end up canceling my order once my account password comes back- Dell just delayed the production a month.  Thank you all for all of your help.
