Hi Dell630i,

I am aware of the lack of upgradability and I'm ok with it. I'm trying to decide if I want to get a G5 or new XPS but I need more info about the new XPS models.

I have both a G5 and an 8940 and have had memory issues with each.  Witht he G5, I swapped out the stock memory and everything works fine.  It's not a screamer, but then again, the price wasn't either.

The 8940 is currently waiting to have its MB replaced (it's a week old) due to bad memory slots.  However, I have been running it single channeled and its very stable for what I need it to do.  Also, the price wasn't that bad and it gave me an air cooled option (several manufacturers wont even give you that anymore).

The G5 is an entry level "gaming" system (it's really not, but it does work for basic games and the 8940 is a stop gap multimedia system that spends a lot of time rendering video while i sleep.  So far it has been a solid choice for the job.  Also, I chose the 8940 becasue I already run another XPS 8930 and it has been a good performer since day 1.

So if you are looking for a blazing fast gaming system, these are not it.  If you are looking for something solid and "good enough" for most gaming, either will work.

Games I play one them:  Squad, WoW, Star Wars TOR, Fallout (all), Skyrim, Post Scriptum, Metro and other similar titles.  No problems running any of them.

@sc-walter what CPU and video card are you running in the XPS and G5? That can make a big difference in performance.

Also, did you make any other modifications to them beside changing out the RAM?

The G5 is a i5-9400 with a GTX 1660 Ti 6GB GDDR6 card.

The 8940 is  i7-10700 with a RTX 2060 Super 8GB GDDR6.

No other mods besides the ram.  I moved the G5 from the stock 8gb to 16.  I plan to move the 8940 from the stock 16 to 48 (32gb upgrades are pretty cheap right now).

I did opt for the 500w PSU on the 8940, but it is the stock PSU.

The 8940 is respectable specs. That should be able to game ok.

I am looking at the i7 with a 2070 Super in one of those two systems.

How is the noise level on them? I would expect them to be a little so under load, but on daily use how are they?

Thanks for the info by the way!

I have had mine for a month now.

I play World of Tanks on it with a 4K monitor and I get 60fps via DP,  which is more than I really need.    I also play flight simulator 2020 on it, and it looks great.

The computer works great.  Fan is slightly noisy but not bad.   keyboard is lousy but works.

No way would I buy an Alienware, since I think they are ugly.   I am super happy with buying this since the computer is as small as they get while still being fairly performant.   Mainly I bought this because I required a 2TB main disk drive and Alienware didn't have that option.

The XPS 8940 is a PIECE OF JUN K.   Dell has tried to reinstall Windows 4 times.....replaced the hard drive....sent me a new replacement machine....and replaced the motherboard.   It shows Dell logo and goes to GRAY SCREEN and NOTHING Dell tech support has tried changes anything

@xsontramp  - If you have an add-in AMD or NVidia video card, the first monitor should be connected to that card, not to any of the 3 onboard Intel UHD Graphics ports.

Some monitors are dumb. Did you open the monitor's On-Screen Display (OSD) by pressing a button(s) on the monitor and confirm it's set to use the type of video port you connected it to on the PC?

BTW: Can you test this monitor and cable on a different PC or a different monitor and cable on this PC?

Both of the computers were brand new STOCK computers.   NOTHING had been added.   The first one worked perfectly for 16 days...then at 6:00 pm on New Year's day, when I turned it on, it wouldn't boot Windows. I had been using it until around 4:00 pm that day earlier.  There is ABSOLUTELY nothing wrong with the monitor.  It works perfectly with my old Inspiron and worked with the 1st XPS 8940 for 16 days.  Then when trying to boot either of these machines,........it obviously works since the Dell logo and swirling circle show........... it goes to GRAY SCREEN.

I honestly think Dell forced something out in an update Jan. 1 and it prevented Windows from booting from that point forward.

Sounds like it might be trying to install a Microsoft update but can't...

Power on and immediately power off by pressing/holding power button on front of PC. As soon as it's off, power on again. Repeat the on/off cycles a total of  3 times and at next power on, it should open the Recovery Environment.

Follow the prompts on that screen to troubleshoot and repair...

I suspect Fast Startup is enabled (default) in Win 10 and that could be the cause of this...

Good to see you are able to run Flight Sim 2020. I have been considering the XPS 8940. I am not a "gamer"; however, the only game I would ever run is Flight Sim 2020. How are your CPU temps when running Flight Sim??

Thanks!

My two cents. I have multiple XPS 8930 units and love them. I now also have the 8940. It is a poor successor to the 8930. Numerous cost cutting corners have been cut by Dell. The case is thinner. There is now a proprietary psu which only comes at 500W max and is totally different from the traditional long used square bulkier supply which can easily be upgraded with numerous after-market units going up to 850 watts and beyond.  The CPU cooling unit is meager at best - a cheap little fan with a mini heat sink underneath it. Limited max capacity for adding additional internal hard drives. These are the things I've noticed already and may find other deficiencies the more I use it. Given what is offered, it is way overpriced. Big mistake Dell. I'm glad I have multiple 8930 units, which I can see are getting big prices online. No surprise there.
