9570 BIOS update appearing via Windows Update

Due to undesirable colour settings and fan profle behaviour in later BIOS versions, I've stayed at version 1.5.0. on my 9570.

Yesterday I noticed, after some Windows updates had been applied, that the system BIOS had jumped up to version 1.8.1

I've since reverted to 1.5.0. and paused updates.

Firmware 1.8.1 was actually pushed out through Windows Update. Is it just me who didn't know these BIOS updates were sneaking in via this method? This is a really Bad Idea.

I knew that Microsoft Surface models received BIOS and other firmware updates through Windows Update, but this is the first I’ve heard of Dell models being updated this way. As for whether it’s a bad idea, I understand your reason for not updating in this specific case, and I do think it’s unfortunate that Windows Update no longer allows users to hide certain updates, but on balance I think making sure BIOS updates are delivered to users is a good thing, since they often contain functional and sometimes even security fixes, and users are typically very bad about performing BIOS/firmware updates. It seems the real underlying problem is that Dell may have released a problematic update.

Yes Dell BIOS Updates are pushed through via Windows Update. Here is a recording of one of my systems UEFI BIOS being updated via Windows Update:

Yes I've seen this reported elsewhere.

If you disable driver updates in Windows Update (which I've done a while ago, because it pushed a flawed driver), I assume this doesn't happen?

I cannot tell if disabling driver updates prevents this, because although I have backed the update out, WU still thinks its installed.
