After Dell Update, XPS 15 (9560) freezes at Dell logo on start-up

Hello! Four days ago, I used the "Dell Update" application to update everything in my system. Many updates occurred (as I had not done it in a few months). Since then, my Dell XPS 9560 does NOT properly start up.

Specifically, if I close my laptop lid and re-open it, it will get stuck on the black screen (with the Dell logo) and it will NOT proceed. The circle with the moving dots (below the logo) will NOT appear. I have to reboot to fix this issue (manually holding down the physical button). It boots up the second time. This happens over and over.

I've already put in a Dell Support request and ran the F12 Diagnostics - the results of these tests are below:

After I showed Dell Support these outputs (from the Diagnostics), they said: "We received your request for the issue reported and have identified this to be a Software related issue."

This seemed obvious to me because this only started happening immediately after I ran the "Dell Update."

Does anyone have any idea how I can fix this? Thank you!

(Specs: XPS 15 9560, BIOS Version: 1.16.0, BIOS Date : 7/26/19, Microsoft Windows 10 Home, Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-7700HQ CPU @ 2.80GHz, SSD: PC300 NVMe SK hynix 512GB, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050).

Hello HamsFazil,

Thanks for your response!

I actually came across this solution (perhaps it was from your post!) and I already turned it off: the issue persists for me (even with it turned off in this menu - see below).

Anything else I am missing here?

Thanks,

I have a similar issue with my Dell XPS15 9560 and already created a thread. The temporary solution what i read in other post is to uncheck the "Fast startup" in the "Advance power settings" >"Choose what the power buttons do" and seems it boots to windows slower but without the need to power ON, OFF, ON

Anyone have any insights? I can't let my computer "sleep" anymore. After it "sleeps," I can only turn it back on after doing a manual reboot (which closes all windows and is massively inconvenient)  .

There seems to be some confusion being spread by Dell Technicians to people who have this issue:

It's absolutely not a hardware issue. There is nothing wrong with your motherboard (if that's what they're telling you).

There are 15-20+ people on this forum ALL saying the exact same thing: we did the "Dell Update" to BIOS 1.16 and now our XPS' gets stuck on Dell logo unless a full shut down-restart is done. It's actually impossible that all of us had our motherboards all die at the exact same time at the exact moment we did a software "Dell Update" of our BIOS. This was their e-mail response to me when I described my issue to them - in detail: https://imgur.com/FNo5XSE - they literally identified my issue (our shared issue) as a software problem a few weeks ago.

My Dell XPS15 9560 i7-7700 HQ CPU 2.80GHz has been having the same start-up problem of freezing at Dell logo and I been turning it off and then on again to get it to  boot Windows 10.  I first read the Dell suggestion of using RTC reset by holding the power button for 30 seconds. Then I went to the F12 key to get to safe mode to run diagnostics.  The first diagnostic showed error unable to modify brightness which I read might be the LCD inverter if the brightness could not be adjusted. I was able to decrease the brightness in settings and then ran diagnostics again which showed all tests passed.  Upon coming across your post that other people were having the same problem with the XPS15 freezes at the Dell logo, at least I knew that it was not a hardware issue, but started wondering what new software update or driver update was causing my problem.  Today I tried a system restore to a previous set point.  Looking at system restore points logged, I chose the latest August date, 8/29/2019, as I did not remember having this start-up problem last month. The system restore took hours instead of minutes, but it did finally complete and I ran another diagnostics which showed all tests passed and a rerun showed error code: 244 USB device failed.  The only "device" plugged in was the power adapter, so I toggled that connection and got all tests passed.  As of now, my computer has been booting up to Windows but I don't know what update started this problem.  I hope Dell comes up with a solution before I'm back to start, literally.  Good on ya for all the info.

Hi everyone!

I found a way fixing the problem. I confirm this is cause by Dell's Bios latest update.

I did a roll back to a previous Bios version and the problem is gone.

Go to : https://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19

Enter your tag number to find appropriate firmwares et drivers...or simply click on detect pc

Under "Dell XPS 15 9560 System BIOS", look at "older version"...choose version 1.14.3 (may 27th 2019)

Install it and your done!

Dell support is garbage, lesson learned with this fiasco. I'm having the same issue as others in this thread. Diagnostics shows nothing wrong, yet Dell Support wants me to send in laptop because "it's a hardware failure". The guy barely spoke/understood English.

Welcome to the Dell Community  @Ticking

How true!!!

There are two things that can solve this until Dell/Intel come up with a new update.

ONE:

Go to "Settings"

Then to "System"

Then on the left hand side click on "Power & Sleep"

Then on the right hand side click on "Additional Power Settings"

Then on the left hand side click on "Choose what Power Buttons Do"

Then click on "Change settings that are currently available"

Then un-check "Turn on fast startup" then "Save Changes" and reboot.

TWO:

Rollback the BIOS and IRST drivers.

Dell XPS 15 9560 System BIOS:
