Can't update Realtek High Definition drivers

Just received latest XPS model, and im having issues using my microphone. It will only work in Skype, anything else Windows gives an error. After much research i've discovered this is due to the Realtek drivers - if I remove them then the microphone works, however, stops working as soon as I disconnect it and then reconnect it.

Additionally, audio sounds poor. I believe this is due to me not having high definition drivers. I've downloaded them from the Dell website for my model, installed, but every time the drivers revert to the old ones so the audio sounds no different. It's definitely a laptop issue as i've saved myself talking into the microphone, then when i play it through my other laptop it sounds perfect.

Any ideas?

When you say the audio sounds poor, what exactly do you mean? I was having similar issues, but as it turned out two things were wrong at the same time (each involving their own fix).
