Cannot start XPS 15

my xps 15 won't start up.

I tried starting the computer unplugged, and with the computer plugged in.

When the computer is plugged in, the light in the front of the computer is lit up, orange.  When I press the power button, the keyboard lights up, and there is a little clicking noise in the area where the DVDs or CDs go. The orange light stays on.   Nothing else happens.  The screen stays black--no activity at all.  I can shut off the computer by holding down the power button for a few seconds.

When the computer is unplugged, the light in the front of the computer is off.  When I press the power button, the light in the front of the computer lights up with a white light, and the keyboard lights up white.  The computer makes the same little noise in the area where the DVDs or CDs go, and nothing else happens.  The screen stays black, with no activity at all.

Any ideas how to get my computer started again?

Unplug the system, disconnect the battery from the system board and hold the power button for 30 sec.

Remove and reinstall the memory modules.

Try powering up on AC only - no battery.  If the system will power up, reconnect the battery and try again.  If that halts power up,  the battery is bad and will need replacement.

If the system still won't power up, the mainboard is bad.  Any XPS system that still has a DVD drive is on the order of a decade old, if not older - and has had a good lifespan.  It likely is better to replace rather than repair the system.

Thank you!  I was not sure what memory modules are, or how to remove and reinstall them, so I tried this instead, and it worked!    Solved: XPS 15 Laptop won't turn on. - Dell Community
