Dell Command Update not working at all since approx 4 April 2021

Hardware is XPS 13 9370 (irrelevant, since there are hundreds of reports of this in the Inspiron forum). All the latest Win 10 Pro updates as of today (12 April 2021) are installed.

DCU v4.1.0 just reports an error "Unable to retrieve inventory information" whenever I go check for updates.

No, it's nothing wrong with my system - either Dell or Microsoft (or both) have up big-time.

Re-installing DCU 4.1.0 makes no difference at all.

Can someone from Dell please read this and sort out this problem? Quickly?

This sort of stuff-up is why I do all my serious work on macOS (no, it's not perfect, but at least it doesn't break stuff every week).

Hi,

A quick update. Dell walked me through some tests; I understand the issue is now with their L3 team.

I checked with a colleague with an Inspiron - same issue. Please note that at the same time as the DCU issue, I started to get an error message regarding my (previously fine) Wacom tablet driver. I therefore suspect one of the recent Windows updates.

In Windows Update sinds then d'r is a driver update:

Is the DCU failure coincidence or is it interrelated? And i not prefer to install this driver since i not have any problem and second screen working fine.

Dell released a new version of Dell Command Update. It should have downloaded automatically; if not, go to dell.com and download the latest DCU.

The new version 4.2.1 does not work on various Dell devices/models I have tried.

All still have "Unable to retrieve system inventory information"

Hi,

I installed all of Tuesday's MS patches and updates. Upon reboot Dell DCU 4.2.0 auto-updated to version 4.2.1, which appears to check the system without error.

Can I suggest a manual installation of DCU 4.2.1 from the Dell site?

Regards, M.

I manually uninstalled v4.2.1 and then went to the Dell support site and downloaded the latest version (4.4.0). Seems to be working now.

From user rossetti-it,

delete or rename the folder C:\ProgramData\dell\UpdateService\

Command | Update 4.4.0 is also buggy and confirmed as such by Dell ProSupport.

It's a shame. This could have been a useful app, but as it stands, it's virtually worthless, since it can't reliably perform basic functions (see below).

> It fails to report, or seemingly acknowledge the correct current version of installed drivers.

> More importantly, it fails to show when (even critical) applicable updates are available for installation.

We've now replicated this issue over a span of a week with 3 different sets of driver updates.

I'm here to bring the same solution.

Before running Dell Command Update, delete the whole C:\ProgramData\Dell\UpdateService folder. It works !
