Dell XPS 13 9310, Display issue after installing update!

Hello,

My Dell XPS 13 9310 with the 11th generation i7 processor, Intel(R) Iris Xe Graphics, and preinstalled Ubuntu 20.04 (Kenel 5.6.0.1022-oem) just arrived yesterday. After installing the suggested updates, I restarted the laptop and it has been restarted with flickering/tearing (horizontal lines) and I cannot see and do anything. Then it goes into GNU GRUB options.
I restored the system into the original configuration and have updated firmware to the last version (Ver. 1.1.1) and after installing the updates, it has still the same issue.

I have tried Ubuntu 18.04 and after installing updates the same issue came back again!

Thanks in advance for your comments!

I just spoke to Dell support.  I have the same issue of screen frequently going blank then coming back a few seconds later.  New xps 13 9310.

Support immediately said it is a known issue and they were working on it.   Said to change freq to 48p in the Intel graphics settings panel.

I think I am already getting dizzy from the lower refresh rate.  Don't know yet if this works.  Only about 30 minutes so far.

I just installed the latest intel driver (9126 build) per AttilaZ.  Changed refresh back to 59p.

I'll update if that helps

Thanks!

So, the support told me to try your solution. I just did but when after I deleted my intel driver and tried to install the downloaded one, I got an error message: System not supported, or something like that.

Which intel driver have you downloaded?

I followed the instructions from page 6 yes and downloaded the exe file from the link. I restarted and there is another driver installed (probably an older one)

@SimonKaars  You need to do the unistall steps more times perhaps, until you only see a generic microsoft driver inatalled (as described on page 6). Important is to stop the windows updates before/right after doing all those steps.

which driver version you downloaded from intel?

Same problem here.  Contacted Dell Support through the WhatsApp.  They finally suggested installing graphics driver from Intel Support.  Fingers crossed that solves the problem.

Hi, So I found the 'problem'. After I deleted the driver for the first time I immediately after tried to install the new one which gave me the 'operating system not supported' error. Then I restarted and saw it had reverted to an older driver, deleted it and tried again to install but same error. I restarted and saw it had reverted to the microstoft driver and then It succeeded in installing the new one (version 27.20.100.9079). I also got the install loop after but there is a post already here addressing the issue, which has a simple solution. I will repost here if the screen problem still occurs. Thanks for the help!

@SimonKaars , dont forget to disable windows updates, otherwise will downgrade to a bad driver.

In fact, I think the original issue is also related to windows messing up the driver while doing updates. When the system comes from Dell it is stable. Then you do all updates and the system goes haywire...at that point, whatever driver you install nothing helps. The only solution seems to be to completely wipe all drivers until just the generic video driver is on the system and then do a clean driver install and then prevent Windows it up again.

Cheers

The video driver on my XPS 13 is Intel Iris Xe Graphics, driver date is 2020-10-28, driver version is 27.20.100.8935.  I am trying to determine whether the driver is the problem?

Is everyone has the display problem has the same driver and version?   Thanks.

Details of my screen problems documented in my previous posting on January 9, previous page in this group.   Since the return expiration date is here, the safe thing is to return the laptop.   Since I like the XPS13, I will just re-order it again when Dell has a sale price same as what I paid for back in December.  I just want to confirm the users having the same problems has the same video driver installed.

patherlee. ah i missed your post. yours seems to be a mush more obvious fault than mine. i just get very occassional faint flicker of the screen. apart from that no frizzes and blackouts.

i have the latest driver through the dell update , same as yours. i am using the 4k screen i7 model

@SWL77 , good to hear that. I hope other people also read this post carefully, so that they can fix their systems.
