Dell XPS 13 9360 External Display issues

**** I changed the title to 9360. It had shown 9343. That was incorrect. ****

I'm having problems with my XPS 13 (July 2017) and external displays. I have an adapter (USBC to HDMI) that I've used in the past for without problems. I've used it to connect to projectors for presentations and to both external monitors and occasionally TVs. I haven't used it in a while. I just tried it and go nothing on the external display. I've tried toggling through the various options (duplicate display, only external, extended display) with no success. Interestingly, the F8 toggles shows all those options even without the adapter plugged. My impression is that in the past it did not show those options unless a display was detected - but I could be wrong about that. I'm wondering if one of the many Win10 , BIOS, and driver updates has changed something. Any ideas?

Thanks

Tom

Try skipping the adapter and use the available port that matches the ext monitor or a display port to hdmi converter cable instead. There have been problems with usb-c display connections reported here on the forum lately. You might search the forum for posts about that.

Just as a point of clarification, the XPS 13 9343 doesn’t have USB-C; it has Mini-DisplayPort. The XPS 13 didn’t get USB-C until the 9350 model. In terms of the issue, Windows Update occasionally installs driver updates, so you can check your update history to see if one was installed. I remember reading that Intel accidentally sent bad graphics drivers through Windows Update earlier this year, so you could try uninstalling whatever Intel HD Graphics drivers are in your system (using Programs and Features) and then reinstalling the drivers available on support.dell.com.

Thanks. I actually do not recall including the model number in the title. I'm not sure where that came from.

I did just look it up, and yes, you are correct. It is a 9360 model and has the USB-C, not a display port. I'm changing the title to reflect that.

Meanwhile, I'll look at the drivers.

Is my memory correct that the external display toggle doesn't show unless an external monitor is detected? As I said, mine shows the options (duplicate, extend, etc.) without anything connected.

Thanks

Tom
