Dell XPS 13 does not shut down
Was having trouble of not being able to shut down my Dell XPS (bought late 2016).
It was super annoying because my laptop never completely shut down when I "shut down".
Instead it re-started automatically, even with lid closed, slowly draining battery if not plugged into AC... and getting warm / hot because of activity.
Found another post that discussed this (https://www.dell.com/community/Laptops-General/XPS-13-9350-won-t-shut-down/td-p/5185885) but none of the solutions offered worked for me.
Then I found this discussion on Reddit (Computer will not shutdown after Fall Creators Update)...
To summarize, I tried several things and the last one worked for me:
- Disabled Fast Startup option (did not work)
- Changed Power Button to Shut Down (did not work)
- Used Windows Power Shell "Stop-Computer" (did not work)
- Unplug power cable then Shut Down while on battery power (WORKED!)
It's not a great solution but at least it's working for me (as of 21 May 2018).
Am posting this in case it helps someone else with this problem.

StealthEffect,
Try going into the power management options and changing the settings there to see if that will help shutdown the system. Start-Settings-System-Power&Sleep. Set the options in this area to meet your needs. Then, click on the bottom that reads Additional Power Settings. Click each option on the left and change the settings to the right in this are to meet your needs as well.

On the 9550, a similar instant-wake issue was following a prior faulty automatic switchover from Sleep to Hibernate after a preset time in advanced power profile settings. Worked around by setting Hibernate After to Never (0), or disabling hibernation altogether.
After this fault, only hard shutdown (5 sec pwr button) would make it stop working.
Some sleep-related bugs were fixed by reflashing BIOS (also resetting, but this goes back to defaults).

I am having the same issue and have tried all the solutions mentioned in other articles, forums, etc. like the ones posted above.
This is incredibly frustrating and ridiculous that this hasn't been solved once and for all. Will try unplugging before shutting down but this is not a real fix. Dell, get your act together.

Thank you for your message. Did the issue start after any recent Windows updates?
Keep the charger connected & put the computer to sleep from the start screen.
Once the computer is in sleep mode, power off the computer using the power button (hard shut down)
Turn on the computer & now turn off the computer using the shutdown option in the start menu.

What happens when you press the shutdown option in the start menu? Does it not respond at all?
What is the power plan option in effect, is it on performance or balanced?
What is the BIOS version installed?
Start the computer in safe mode by following this link & check if the system turns off from the start menu. This will help us diagnose if there is an OS or a driver issue.

I have a similar issue with my XPS 13 9360 running windows 10. When shutdown is clicked on via the start menu, it shuts down and after about 3 seconds, it starts to come on once again. Already tried booting in safe mode and performing a shutdown but the problem persists.

Please check the BIOS version installed.
Please restart the computer & tap F2 to get in to BIOS- Click on System logs – Power events & check if there is any message that says ASF2 force off or ASF2 force On.
