Reinstall all the original Dell (must be Dell) drivers that were customized for your exact motherboard. Laptop drivers rarely if ever get updated but if they ever do they must come from Dell not Microsoft, Intel or other manufacturers. Windows Update takes care of updating Windows.

I'm also experiencing this exact issue. Even with nothing but a couple Putty sessions and Chrome and a few tabs running text pages. The system runs hot, fans cranking, and rapid battery drain. I'm getting about 2.5 - 3 hours of runtime. One of the reasons I got this XPS was the claimed 18-20 hours of battery life. As a tech that spends all my time at remote sites, I need decent battery life.

I'm currently experimenting by restoring the Dell factory image. The first thing I did when I got the computer was a fresh install of Windows 10. Installed the latest Dell drivers, as well as a few necessary applications such of Office. I'm currently experimenting by restoring the Dell factory image. We'll see if that makes any improvements, but so far, it seems pretty stock with no pre-installed bloat.

Next step for me will be to remove the stock thermal paste and replace with liquid metal paste to help keep thermals down and fan speeds low.
